At a loss

I don't even know what would cause this....so I'll just post some pics and wait. This coin is rough, but it's odd...I know my picture quality sucks
,but look closely. I'm going to have to see what I can do to be able to take better images.

Looks like hits from a coin with a reeded edge. If those hits above the date are what you are talking about.

 

You're right. This is odd. I'm at a total loss.

 

A 36 year-old coin could have taken a hit from almost anything.

You're right. But this almost looks like a number or a letter?? Was it done in the minting process?

 

Oh man, that is crazy. I have/had the same marks on a penny I found CRH but mine was in the shoulder. I cannot remember if I kept it or not but chalked it up to PMD so I think I tossed it back to coinstar.

When I get home I'll see if I still have it.

Yeah, if it is a PMD I'm fine with that. I would just like to find out if I should keep it. For me, errors are one of the coolest aspects of collecting.

If I can find mine I'll post it but its the same damage. I agree its not a "minting" error but could have happened in the mint from something post production rattling around somewhere.

I agree, just because something isn't work $10000/a mint error doesn't make it less interesting to me (normal wear and tear excluded).

 

Exactly! Especially at the stage I'm at in collecting.

 

Too large spacing for a reed hit, too small a spacing for being from a memorial reverse hit. just about right for the grooves on a small pair of pliers or similar instrument.

 

Honestly, I wish I could just say that it was done in the minting process and be done with it, but I would be lying and making you look like a gullible fool at the same time. When I said that almost anything could be responsible for the damage, I'm positive that you could go to any hardware store and find dozens of items that could replicate those marks. Whether you can prove what specific item caused the marks or not, it is still PMD.

Hi All,
So being new as well I started saving everything...in the beginning. So here is my example of the original penny posted. While it does not exactly match it is close in damage to posters penny (my new macro camera will be coming so pics will get better ). I got rid of the other penny with same damage to the shoulder because again it is PMD but I do think (I KNOW others on board know more) that it is something that happened in the mint post production.

 

I found the same marks I can see on my penny on the side etching of a 2008 Martin Van Buren Presidential coin!
