Of course the only genuine off-center draped bust dollars are a variety of 1795, but anything is possible on eBay!!! The following listing passed the Bay and sold in spite of numerous reports through their ineffective reporting process; pat answer was there was NO policy violation with this one… I noted the odd feature of the “6” for future reference and then saw this latest offering this morning: Further review indicates it is the same seller and same coin; both sellers are from the same location and have duplicate mint sets for sale. So, I will continue to try to find a different example with this attribution feature! Best, Jack.
Here's a genuine 1795 OC: Since I'm looking for a 1796 dollar, it's good to know about this fake. Thanks, Jack
Some of the rookies have no Idea why the bust is off center. I have read many of the articles and photo presentations., others and Newbies haven't.
The counterfeiters used a 1795 off centered bust coin to create a hub. (This hub is also the one known as the "Vampire Hub" for the two "bite makes usually seen on Liberty's neck.) They made some 1795 dies from the hub and then removed the 5 from the hub. They then used the hub to make many more 179_ dies and they also made a hub without the date. Dies made from these hubs then had the dates punched into the dies. The "Vampire" uncentered bust can be found on fakes of all dates from 1795 to 1804.
