Are you attached to them? Its hard to find good proof sets of those years.

I collect proof sets also, and I made the mistake of buying a few "unopened" sets on E-Bay. When I received them, the envelopes looked like they were just made. Later on I found peopled auctioning off brand new envelopes only. So, it looks like I paid an extra $5-$6 per set because they were "unopened". Did you buy yours online also? Your sets are worth between $12-$13 each.

I'd have to agree. There's very little credibility to the claim "unopened". As TC2007 says, people can buy envelopes which are copies of the originals. If the set has the original information sheet (they didn't have true COA's back then) it might be worth a little more, but it's very difficult to verify the claim of "unopened". Just curious, does the return address on the envelope have a zip code? If so, it's certain to be a copy, rather than genuine.

Has anyone out there every bought a set promoted as unopened and found something rare in it, like a small date coin?

Never, I bought several "unopened" sets, but there were no accented hair Kennedys, no small dates, nothing special. I still buy proof sets from the late '50's and early '60's, but I buy the opened sets from my dealer only.

I once brought an unopened 1962 Proof Set and found a 1963 quarter in it!

Someone please correct me if I am wrong! I am under the impression that mint and proof sets were never sealed from the mint and that humidity was the culprit behind the adheseive sealing these sets.
If I remember correctly, Doug was talking about that quite some time ago.
Perhaps he or Speedy will come by and confirm this for us.
****Again, I could be wrong, but let's see what everyone else says.

You are correct - there is no such thing as an "unopened" Proof or Mint set. It's just a sales technique to make people think they might have a chance at getting something they aren't.

i disagree with this we bought a large deal of unopened sets at the shop the other day they were from an old time collector who ordered a bunch of them when they were new,

and YES there is such thing as an unopened proof set why do you think the ones that have been opened were ususally by a letter opener they came from the mint in SEALED packages but even being sealed they are only worth a few dollars more per set.

Believe what ya want, but the mint never sealed them.

Disagree all you want but it is wasted energy. Nothing you said disputes the statement that the Mint issued all proof sets (in envelpes, anyway) unsealed. You bought a bunch of sets the other day that were 40 years old, and they were sealed - so what? Humidity and pressure in the past four decades are responsible for that, not some Mint employee's spit.

As for sets opened with a letter opener? Once the envelope became sealed that is how they chose tp open it.

My Grandad collected 5 sets from every year starting 1961. He said when he recieved them he would look at one of the sets, then put them away. 40 years later when I got them, I got 1 set from each year 1961-1964 in an opened envelope and 4 sealed ones. I'm inclined to believe that they came sealed myself.

I think one of you non-believer's should take the time to reference this with the U.S. Mint
    What do you think?
It sure would put this subject to bed for you guy's.

Gee way to be a jerk about it, and let me just ask you wether its right or not where did you get your information from do you actually know this or are you just going along with what doug says because he knows so much more than you? kinda intresting. Wether they were sealed or not there is no need ot be a jerk about it.
