I had to share this with you because it shows what little effort it took to get not one but two of my nephews thinking about paper and coin currency as part of their future. Just don't give them a wheat cent or a new two dollar bill, but something a step up that even their friends will admire. Putting them in a spotlight gives them a feeling of importance. It's a feeling they don't want to give up. In this case it was a silver certificate in the 66 to 68 range and began a good investment. The other was a 1909 SVBD but no S mint mark. I don't think that was a sacrifice on my part. I was able to create an interest in two YN's. Perhaps if we are much more giving to those who will follow, they actually will follow and keep the hobby alive.
Reminds me of the time I took my son to his first coin show - and 4 of his friends decided they wanted to go along ! THAT was quite a hectic day But I had more fun that a barrel of monekys, laughed till my sides hurt ! And each kid ended up taking home all the coins they could carry. It's really nice to see others getting young collectors interested. My son is 5 and I got him started by letting him go through my collection and picking out his favorite types of coins. He gravitated towards ASE's and Morgans, so I got him a 2012 proof ASE and an 03 Morgan to get started. It was game on from there, he absolutely loves looking for coins and going to shows with me.
