So I have a 1940 nickel, and in my eyes it's in vf condition. The only thing that I see wrong with the coin is maybe the smallest scratch you could see on such an old coin, and a small yellow spot at the top. I can very clearly see every steps on Monticello's staircase. Has a nice shine to it. Can't get a picture just yet but I will tonight. I was wondering if this coin would be worth much if it's in vf condition. Heard something about the steps being visible is a plus.
Sorry Tyler, just an common circulation find, even in VF. Full Steps can make a high grade uncirculated coin more valuable. The indicate a strong strike, which is rare on some specific older dates and mints.
1940 plain is a very common date. I actually just took a few 40 and 41 nickels ( Philly) out to spend as nickels. The D and S have a tiny premium. Your 40 would have to be mint state condition to be worth anything. If it is VF it is unlikely "full steps".
Well then it's gotta be an AU condition. But it sounds like that year doesn't matter because it isn't mint state or better. I wish I had a picture but it's just me giving a conservative estimate on the coin due to the yellow spot and a little scratch. But them steps are so full that I feel like I can walk on em If it wasn't for that yellow, I'd say it's the closest thing to mint state without being mint state lol. My luck. Bet you it was in collection till that yellow spot appeared on it.
I sure wish I did. It sure would help me stay out of your guys hair haha I'll have to go get me one as soon as I find a little extra cash
