I saw these on Great Collections recently. Has NGC started a new multi-coin holder? Is this likely just a dealers only item? It also resembles what large coins (like 5 oz ATBs or kilo coins) are slabbed in. For some reason I don't really like these. It looks like there is too much empty space and that the holder is too big for just the two Morgans slabbed. What do you all think? http://www.greatcollections.com/Coi...ar-NGC-MS-6364-2-Coins-MultiCoin-Holder-Toned
I was always curious about how much they charge for those? I have owned a few of these but most likely wouldnt want to pay the extra submission fee
NGC has a couple of oversized holders. One can accept coins up to 120mm, and another can accept coins up to 180mm. https://www.ngccoin.com/coin-grading/holders/ Chris
There is an NGC three coin Carson City set on eBay right now. With three in the holder it looks pretty good imo. It being all black helps too.
It does look like there is too much free space. I think I recall seeing one time that they put a whole mint set in a graded holder. What would the reason for that be? Wouldn't you just crack the coin out of the set?
I'll never understand why they made one the size of a tv dinner tray. Way to much free space and just way to big
I agree that it's way too big for 2 Morgans. It would look awesome with 4 Morgans, but I don't even see why you'd want to slab more than one of them together. They're easier to sell slabbed separately. Although it would never happen, I'd laugh my butt off if I saw like 30 T1 Liberty gold dollars in one giant multi-holder.
The first multi-coin holder was used primarily for Mint, Proof, and SQ sets. It could also hold as many as 5 Morgan dollars, but this holder was discontinued. The over-sized holders that are currently used can accommodate, not only the ATB hockey pucks, but large medals as well. In addition to these, NGC also produces a standard-sized holder for high relief coins and medals. I had to use this for some of my ANA medals. Chris
@cpm9ball i saw you quoted my post and thought, crap, what did I do now! LOL. Thanks for the info on the discontinued holders. Would there still be any reason to want to slab an entire mint/proof set? I have seen that some valuable coins from sets are missing the mint mark. I've never submitted anything for grading so I'm not sure how it works but the slab would have the individual coin and say something about the missing mint mark. It does not contain an entire set. Does the grading company crack it out of the set?
Quoting someone's post is the easiest way to get that person's attention when referring to their comments. Sometimes people don't use this simple method (Click on Reply) so the person doesn't know that their question is being answered. The multi-coin holder is no longer available from NGC. Some people liked this option for birthday sets. Each coin was graded individually. I've never seen one of the "No-S" proof sets housed in the multi-coin holder, but I guess it was a possible option. I don't know why someone would want to slab a "No-S" proof coin separately. The full proof set is worth a lot more in the OGP. Personally, I wouldn't use one of the over-sized holders for a mint or proof set. I wouldn't even use one for a 4-coin or 5-coin set of Morgan, Peace or Ike dollars, but that's just my opinion. Right now, I have 3 medals in the over-sized holders, 2 @ 63.5mm and 1 @ 78mm. I have many others in the range of 50mm - 90mm, but NGC doesn't accept all of them for grading. Chris
