Nope but I DID send the seller this message: "Thanks for listing the PCGS Price Guide. DENOMINATION---- 50 CENTS COMPOSTION ----SEE BELOW GRADE -- NANCS, PR 69.5 DM CAMEO --- BELOW IS A LINK TO THE PCGS PRICE FOR YOUR USE. Now, how does this relate to this NON-PCGS graded coin? Could you please direct me to the NANCS site so I can form an opinion? Thanks for your time, clembo" Personally I don't think PCGS would grade that coin higher than PF 69.13331 kinda ultra deep cam and made of metal.
I have never heard of a company putting on a holder 69.5 or any decimaly of course most grading companies use a denamation such as 63.1, 63.5, or 63.9 but then they have a finalizer that finalizes the grade obvesally they dont thats kinda screwy.
Take another look at the slab as it has the company's web site listed. nancs.com Interesting site. Now you have just over 100 grades within the MS60 to MS70. OOPS!!! I just used the coin ID listed on the slab and it doesn't match what's in the NANCS database. Here's the return I get... ANOTHER WOW! Upon further research I found this e-bay auction. 2004-S-5C-PEACE-MEDAL-NICKEL-GEM-PR70DCAM-NANC The seller "FinestKnown.com" has many NANC coins for sell. That auction lead me here... northamericannumismaticcertification.com/ Both NANC and NANCS look somewhat alike in their build. NANC refers to themselves on their web site as North American Numismatic Certification NANCS refers to themselves on their web site as North American Numismatic Certification Service The slabs look nothing alike, especially the labels. Which came first? NANCS or NANC? Are they related in some way? Or just a coincidence?
Just one more reason I don't buy slabbed coins, no matter the reputation, or lack there of of the grader. I'd say at least 50% of the time I disagree with grades given by PCGS and ANACS, so I don't waste my money on encased coins I dislike. It's amazing these shady grading services stay in any sort of business at all. The only people I see, or I'd hope, that were buying from them are non-collectors. Guy~
They both appeared about the same time but then NANCS disappered for awhile. I have seen more NANC slabs than NANCS slabs. I do not believe the two firms are related. Having several companis that have identical or nearly identical names is not unusual. There have been seveal different companies that have used decimal grades.
This is certainly unwarranted precision since graders may not agree to the nearest 1 let alone the nearest 0.1. Has anyone here ever seen separate grades given to obverse and reverse (not a crazy idea, I've just never seen it) Has anyone ever heard of the "overall collector value scale" before? With 8 C grades and from 30 to 100 points within each grade we have a 4,160 point scale. That is crazy.
Response from the seller I actually got a resonse from the seller and honestly have no proble with it. Here it is. "how does it relate ? many people have no idea how to price a certified coin . coin universe is a great site to help those folks see the current retail value of any given coin. as you can see by pcgs i have placed a buy that is roughly half the value of a pr-69 . the address for nancs is http://nancs.com/ please feel free to check them out , i am very pleased with the coins i have purchased from them . polly ps. here is another price guide u may find usefull: http://www.numisexpert.com/neportal/system/prices/dll.asp?typeName=Kennedy&coinName=Halves polly" I intend to check out the site, silly as it seems. clembo
I actually have a coin graded by NANC (no s). It is a 2004 PR70 Lincoln. I doubt that it is a 70 and I don't think I could tell if it was, but it is a nice looking coin. It cost me a whole $1.04 plus shipping ($2 and change for a total). I don't think I lost anything to speak of.
If you look hard enough anyone can buy slabs, type up a cert and sell it as a slabbed coin. There are many unsuspecting buyers out there who do not know. Nothing you can do about it thats for sure! RickieB
Did you possibly mean sell a slab? We can all buy them that's for sure. As for slabbing them - hell yes. Just get the right software, print some labels. pop them into a holder available on line and VIOLA you are a "certified" slabber. Damn shame ain't it?
i disagree with this to an extent, you may be able to create your own company but it would not be a repatable one, and you would not be able to counterfit a NGC or PCGS slab (now im not saying it hasnt ever been done) it is just very hard to do if you have ever been to either of those companies and seen how it is done you couldnt just do it in your basement its more complicated than that. Not to knock anyone but as i menchoned earlier in i think a different forum, the people who dont like slabs seem to be the older generation collector, or the novice collector most serious collectors try to put togeather a nice slabed set such as a 63 morgan set. and as bad as this sounds the older generation is slowley either getting out of the business or is dieing off it seems like the newer generation wants the slabed coins And by the slabed coins i mean by NGC or PCGS not some homegrown slab company i guess ANACS or ICG is alright although i wouldnt sent my coins to them. And again for one more time this is my opinion i am not trying to knock someone I am just stating what i have seen from my experance in the coin business.
Hello Coinfisher, Guess I am one of those old timers at the ripe old age of 45. My previous post was basically a joke and a bad one at that because it IS so true. I own very few slabbed coins. Most are PCGS, NGC or ANACS. I even have a few PCI that I am happy with. You've missed the point here I'm afraid. ANYONE can slab and it will sell to the inexperienced. Type SGS into the search engine on CoinTalk and see what we have to say. TOTAL OVERGRADED GARBAGE that sells like hot cakes. We're not talking about counterfeiting slabs in PCGS or NGC holders here. We're addressing other companies and/or individuals that slab coins. 99% are NOT qualified. I think many will agree with that. I'm afraid you had one comment that really DID offend me. Here it is" "most serious collectors try to put togeather a nice slabed set such as a 63 morgan set. and as bad as this sounds the older generation is slowley either getting out of the business or is dieing off it seems like the newer generation wants the slabed coins" Been to a coin show lately? Old folks, and I'm not even one for cripes sake, still know what's going on. I have a set of killer business strike 2 Cent Pieces that will knock you socks off. I plan on getting it slabbed some day. BY PCGS most likely. SERIOUS collectors come in all ages.
It depends on what kind of "serious collector" you are. I don't like slabbed coins, and I'm hardly an older generation collector, nor a novice. Slabbed coins are great, if you are puting together a set you plan on selling someday. I don't plan on selling, so my grade is suffecient, as I collect for pleasure, not profit. That is the difference between most who buy slabs and most who don't. Guy~
