Nice medal, Bausch & Lomb has been around for a long time, like since the 1850's or so, did you win that medal in a contest or did all students get one? And is it sterling silver or something else?
Very Cool medal Kentucky! Honorary medals of service/award are one of my favorites to collect. I have seen one before but at the time it was out pf my price range.
I just figured that sometime in your life it must have been in the gutter before this. Or did you mean it is always in the gutter?
Mine is bronze and identical. Reverse is blank. B&L made a lot of high quality lenses and scientific instruments especially for schools. Today other companies maker junk for schools from what I've seen. They were enormous in the past in this business. They still have a pretty good name I believe. I think they are 1 3/4" by 2 1/4".
Wiki says; In this manner, at the end of the 19th century, the product range included eyeglasses, microscopes and binoculars, as well as projectors, camera lenses and camera diaphragms. I'm pretty sure they made my old spectroscope as well (at least the lenses). I've always suspected these were provided to encourage school boards to buy their products and most were used for science fairs or rewards for scholarship.
Jeesh. I should read more and post less; "In 1933, Bausch + Lomb started to honor outstanding high school science students with the Bausch+Lomb Honorary Science Award. In the 1930s, military products represented 70% of total production. The Ray-Ban brand of sunglasses was developed for pilots in 1936." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bausch_&_Lomb
"The Gutter" is similar to the Hotel California, you can checkout any time you want, but you can never leave . . .
Tuck, my friend . . . . Suffice it to say, that I never received one of these when I was in school . . . . Z
