This coin is I think, Constaninus I, but the reverse is damaged and I cannot identify it. Can anyone reckognise it? Thanks
Thanks TIF, It doesnt look like it though. The Horse seems to be the largest figure on the coin and is standing tall. I cannot see the horseman either, unless he is already down in the lower left corner.
I'm guessing Constantius and not Constantine....Perhaps like this example: https://www.acsearch.info/search.ht...&category=1-2&en=1&de=1&fr=1&it=1&es=1&ot=1&i
This era isn't my strongest suit but I'm pretty sure it is a fallen horseman. On your coin you can see the Roman lunging to spear the enemy and you can see the head of the fallen enemy. There is corrosion or damage to the lower part where the horse would be.
The reverse is tough to make sense of.....but I'm sure a few of the 'LRB' specialists will chime in soon.
Reverse is strange... If I look at reverse as you do, I see a dog and a female figure standing on the right. If I flip it upside down, I think I can see exergue in the bottom
It looks very much like what is left of a falling horseman to me. Looking at the bust style should allow us to identify the mint. I might try later.
Certainly it is a falling horseman but I feel the face that remains is looking left so the style was FH4 'clutching' rather than the reaching type TIF showed. It is hard to say but it is always good to start with what you know and stick to what is known to exist. The obverse is clearly Constantius II. He has no coins with dogs. The head and leg of the soldier are pretty clear so some form of falling horseman is pretty certain. You can always make it more clear for helpers if you give the size of the coin (16mm 0r 22mm?).
@TIF I wish I had your graphic manipulation skills @dougsmit You are correct. I am always in ahurry and I forget the basics.
Fact is you have all seen many more damaged coins and know more about coins than myself and are most likely right on Fel Temp
