As all of you know, I'm not a good photographer, but I have improved. Here are some recent reshoots of coins, all taken by the same guy with the same camera. Just different lighting and more post pic editing (Gimp). The original pics were editing some using Photobuckets build in editing tools (mainly crop/contrast). All of the new pics were taken in sunlight coming in through my back yard door. The black backgrounds were painted in Gimp. original pics.. new... Better, but not great. Mainly just putting the sides together in one pic. Original... New pic... One more, original pics.... new pic... I'm reshooting several of my old coin pics, I'll post more here later. Please feel free to share your coin reshoots!
Those new shots look better than the ones on your table, the biggest problem glare from light. I have a similar problem taking shots with my smart phone.
Maybe I should be paying you to re-shoot my entire collection. LOL. Do I get any discounts? After all, I'd consider it a bonus to get to play with 9.5 ounces worth of ancient silver.
Although I will miss your table, the new shots are better. Some improvement with the lighting will help a lot. Itook your first image and tried a little editing, but I don't think my results are any better. Try bouncing your light. It helps for me with the glare. Your image first followed by my edited image:
which one of these two i like better depends one where my head is relative to my monitor! your edited pic looks more like the my reshot pic before i edited it myself. which looks better on everyone elses monitor/mobile device? coin pictures are a pain the the @##!
How did you get your coins together on the black background? My efforts have not gone well. Your photos look good. Keep at it!
What photo editing program are you using? I use Picasa and it's easy to combine images into a collage.
I use gimp and "paint" the backgrounds. I go around the coins with a "soft" brush tool, then slap black on the rest with a large brush.
@chrsmat71 I've been working on the same thing. Re photograghing my collection I got several done this weekend, yesterday was slightly overcast and apperantly made a big difference. They are scattered amongst the posts this weekend.
Yes, I've noticed. Several of you inspired me to get in gear as of late. Had the same thing here today, was planning to do some coin photos, but the clouds rolled in. Still don't have an indoor set up I'm happy with.
Paint. I've tried to use Photoscape but whenever I circle cropped it enlarged the images and made them look pixelated and then I would have to go in and "paint" the white space black. Is this how everyone does it? Because it seems like a pain. On the rare chance when I can get my background the same then Paint works ok but usually there's a faint difference between the blacks of each photo that irritates me.
I shoot on a black background, but there are times I have "paint" small parts of the background because of glare or something. Have you tried Picasa? It's free and I find it easy to work with.
@chrsmat71 I don't see a problem if you really want to use the table as a background. Not really sure how Gimp works, but you should be able to set the background. Take a picture of your desk first, then just insert the image, and then the coin on top of it. Also, I'm not sure how others feel. But I like a little glare on the coin, it shows the patina on it and highlights the relief. Too many times I get coins from sellers and the picture looks nothing like the actual coin. I'm not sure if its because they alter the lighting to take away the glare and thus it changes the color.
I used the table when I first started collecting. It was kind of funny, but it distracts from the coins, so I'm going to replace those pics with new ones.
Sorry for the thread hijack...but this is a reshoot...here's the original: Here is what I try to do: Those are the originals, I just resized them so they weren't huge. Then I'll cut and combine and get this: This is one that turned out better than most. Often time you can tell a difference between obverse and reverse backgrounds which I find distracting.
