Why Do You Collect Ancients?

Talking about cool, well I just got back a while ago. I had taken my super handsome Rottie for a 10 km. walk. My nose almost fell off, it was OK for the first 5 KM walking with the wind on my backside. Going home, I had to content with a 30 km wind+temp. of -15 made it feel like -32. I am still unthawing....

Ironically, it warmed-up to minus -2 degrees Celsius here today!

I collect ancients, mostly Judean, because of their links to Biblical times. I often wonder about what it would have been like to live in that time.

I also wonder about what they don't tell us. There's so much more about our history that still needs to be discovered.

Plus, ancients pwn dem modern noobs.

I'm not even sure what it means to "follow" another member? ... I see that I currently have several members that I either follow, or that follow me ... however, this must be remnants from the old CoinTalk format when we asked for "friends"? (for I've never hit the "follow" button) ... ummm, intentionally

... oh, but I'd be totally flattered to have a weird holy man drug addict follow my coins! (it'll be awesome having a wingman follow me down my coin rabbit-holes!)

 

WOW....thats almost tropical to what we have down here! Thor, does not want to wear a "doggie coat", so he is out there with not much protection, Rottweilers have a very short hair, compared with most other breeds. Back to coins, Deacon Ray is right you have a marvelous collection....best in Manitoba for sure.

I came to ancients after collecting moderns for a little while. There is a different approach to collecting modern U.S. coins that just did not appeal to me. All the super interesting and cool posts here at CoinTalk and the Great way members treated each other here made me realize that ancients are something to start looking into. And I started off slowly. Bought 12 LRBs, picked up a copy of Sear's Ancient Coins and Their Values, bought two more, then got a couple denari and was hooked. Actually I'm about to unload my U.S. coins because there's not much love for those coins.

Now my other passion is U.S. military monies! I have about 400 tokens from various installations all over the world, a few military payment certificates, some chits, and POGs.

 

Thank you, P and G, but I can't take any credit for the collection other than having purchased one. The collections sold by Littleton are created by the Educational Coin Company under Robin Danziger. I'm working on a custom design for my collection of Vespasian silver. You guys will be the first to see it.

Guess I'm like most everyone else on the list: I've been fascinated with ancient history and epic literature since my parents gave me junior versions of the Iliad and the Odyssey at age nine, started collecting American coins at about the same time, always been a collector of everything from fossils and minerals to Mardi Gras memorabilia -- but once I found out that ancient coins were actually available and affordable, they've been my primary passion. It's just amazing to me to hold a 2000+ year old piece of art and history in my hand, and to contemplate the many other hands that have held it.

I've always liked history, but was never particularly interested in ancient history. Unit 5 years ago, I didn't even know people that had my income (not much) could collect 2000 year old coins!

The short story is ...

art museum visit + historical fiction book + looking for state quarters for my Dad = ebay ancient coin purchase for 10 bucks.

I've learned more ancient history in the last 5 years than I learned in the 40 years before that, the coin stoked my interested in history more than the other way around really.
