The first one is PCGS, the second is NGC. They are graded differently. What are the grades/which one is better, in your opinion?

Yup top is a technical better but since you ask it must be a trick question. Did they eye appeal hit the top one for the woody and verdigris on lower reverse or details it for the splotch around the verdigris?

I'll grade the top one at 20 and the second at 13 . That's out of 70 of course .

I'll guess that the top one came back "details"

The lower one because of the verdigris.

IMO, the top coin obviously has less wear than the bottom coin. I grade it VG-10 details (green environmental damage). However, I'll bet PCGS graded it F-12 details. :nailbiting:

The bottom coin may just squeak into VG-8; however, I'll bet it is net graded due to the damaged reverse and received a straight grade of G-6. :nailbiting:

I suspect the bottom coin is graded higher . . . I think the top coin was lucky to be graded, and has been netted to address what appears to me to be a very careful cleaning (brushing) of its surfaces, leaving it with an unnatural look. While marked up, the bottom coin is completely natural.

    Whats" green environmental damage"?
That spot was perfectly noticeable when graded,
Was it overlooked because of age?

I'll guess VG10 for the first one and G06 for the second one. As to which one is the "better coin," I think that's up to personal preference but I kind of like the second coin more.

IMO, the top coin is natural enough. The streaks are from the planchet alloy mixture not from brushing. Key is the brown color on the more worn parts of the face. If the coin were cleaned, these areas would not look as they do - perfectly natural.

We're both entitled to our respective opinions. I'm just suspicious that the top coin has been doctored . . . brushed and then darkened in isolated areas of concern. I think the lighter areas you cite as streaking, are micro grooves in the surface from brushing, and reflect more light than the surrounding areas.

Seeing the coin in hand would convince me one way or the other.
