That's a tragic story with a wonderful ending. I'm so glad for you. I know of what you speak (never drugs). Faith can make a difference.

This is eerily similar to my own road to becoming a collector of ancients, except for the fact that I collected U.S. coins (taken from circulation, similar to Doug) when I was in grade school and junior high school.

Not only was I uninterested in history during my school years, I mostly detested it. My teachers were uninspired and uninspiring. While a week's trip to Rome during high school Easter break confirmed my interest in Rome and its ancient heritage, that interest lay long dormant until I retired and was browsing an Ancient Creations store in Las Vegas. I became absolutely fascinated by the quality and condition of a Pinarius Natta denarius, and started searching the Internet for other ancient coins.

Primarily, I love the artistry and history represented by ancient Roman coins, especially first-century and earlier. I'm fascinated by ideas and theories about daily ancient life; the ancient ruins of Ostia, Pompeii, and Herculaneum were the highlights of my trip to Italy last Fall.

I wonder how Rome's armies of 40,000+ soldiers were fed every day. How did Roman leaders communicate effectively and efficiently over the vast area of their empire? How did they travel? What was everyday life like for the citizens of first-century Rome? What was business and commerce like in Rome? How did the anonymous Roman engineers build the Colosseum? The aqueducts? The Via Appia?

Ancient coins tie all these areas together. In addition, they're so much more varied and diverse than modern coins that I don't really understand how a collector can sustain an interest in modern coins other than for investment and speculation reasons. But fundamentally and ultimately, it's the beauty and history of ancient coins that captures me.

I agree and I share many of your thoughts. Fascinating to think of those times, but at the same time, they were the same people as we are today...

Deacon Ray, yours is one of the most inspiring reasons for collecting ancients coins that I have read in a while. Certainly not a run of the mill reason (like mine: 'I collect ancients because I love history').
My hat off to you sir!

We are statistical miracles and I thank the Almighty every morning for allowing me to wake up clean—not needing narcotics or anything else. The only thing that I need is to be able to help as many people as possible. Most don't make it. The ones who do need to give it away to keep it. Bless you, my friend!

    Well said Deacon Ray:happy:
I was brought up in German tradition, my parents allowed me to have a beer/glass of wine with meals at tender age of six, coffee at same time for breakfast, smoking was forbidden....thank God! Bad stuff like drugs were taboo. So, I grew up with as a non smoker/ never even tried drugs/ only have a cold beer if I am thirsty at work/ with a meal. I like a good Starbucks coffee, but can go without. My only bad habit is good food, I put down 5000+ calories a day, but my body fat index is 9 percent....so I burn it off! My only real addiction are wanting to add nice coins to my collection;)
I may offend some members here, since I cannot say I prefer ancients over other eras in history, I love all the coins that were struck from 650BC in Asia Minor to 1934. Although there are some more "modern" ones that found a home with my coll. like the 1969 Biafra 5AV piece Proof Set/ 1969 Uganda 4AV/5AR proof set. The AV 1000 Schillings weighs 145g.! Poor man's version of a Holy Roman AV 40 Dukats struck in 1629 Bohemia/ Ferdinand III.

I got hooked on prescription narcotic pain killers when I had a hip injury. It happened quickly. The doctor's prescription was not enough. I craved more and more and went looking for it and acquiring it elsewhere. I came very close to death.

You have an inspiring enthusiasm! I enjoy your posts! I too have that enthusiasm for the Biblical era (and post Biblical Roman) coins.

I subscribe to ancestry.com and found that I have several German ancestors. They migrated to Pennsylvania during the eighteenth century.

Yah, I still suffer from a wee bit of addiction problems ... but DRay, I am very happy to hear that you have found a solution to your problem ...

Ummm, I did somehow manage to quit smoking cigs and pot after 30 years of puffing, but I can't even imagine quitting drinking ... or should I say that I can't imagine successfully quitting drinking!

But congrats again on your victory!

    Oh sorry! coins rock!!

Okay sure, coin collecting may be a bit of an addiction, but as far as my addictions go, coin collecting is by far my most therapeutic!

    Long live ancient coins!

    Thanks:)

I was born In Julich, close to Koln/Cologne. In my region we are all Roman Catholic. When the last Herzog/ Duke of Julich-Cleve-Berg died without a heir in 1610, the Furst/Prince of Pfalz, Friedrich V was by right allowed to take over the title. However, the Pope, Paul V would not allow it, since he was a Lutheran. The Pope, then decreed that the Duchy would be given to Spain and incorporated into the Spanish Netherlands, luckily Friedrich V converted to Catholism and became Duke of Julich-Cleve-Berg. I did this all by memory so hope all the facts are right.
