Depends - if you like skateboarding more than the coins then certainly sell some of them and get your skateboard fixed. If you like your coins better then do not sell. Just by asking the question I think you want to sell some coins. Nothing wrong with selling some coins.

Lucky it was your board and not you, ask yourself which gives you more satisfaction (skateboarding or coin collecting) and choose that one remembering the body in most cases gives out before the mind does, coin collecting isn't as hard on the body :)

Selling the beauties in your collection is a permanent thing, you won't get them back. So BE SURE you are willing to part with them. It's a lesson I learned as a teenager, and as an adult I sold almost 1/3 of my collection to buy a diamond ring for my wife. I've never missed those coins.

just buy some half dollars from the bank, pick out the silver, and then sell them to a dealer for $1.75 for 1965-1970 and $4.50 for 1964 and before. just a quick way to earn some $;)

This was something I was thinking about today (NOT the diamond ring part :D :D ). I've always said that if I needed to I would sell my collection and use it to buy a house. Today I was thinking about the coins I own that I wouldn't be able to replace very easy now. While sometime down the road I might be able to afford much better coins I just wish I could keep them all! Now if I did ever have to do what you did......I don't think I would have one regret.

Like mark said, whatever is more important to you. I was kinda in a situation like that a couple years ago. I desperately needed money, so I started going through my collection trying to figure up how much I could get for it. I realized how much I loved my coins, and it got me back into the hobby. I sold my '88 Cadillac instead, and I LOVED that car. Coins are my passion though, so make up your own mind. Can you do a kick-flip?

just curious but where do you go to get full bag price for a few coins? plus if he dosnt have enough money to replace a $50 board i dont think he can afford to buy half dollars even at face! and to answer his question dont sell your coins just get a job and if you have a job and just no money just save up. also for my own curosity what kind of coins do you have?

I love skateboarding and coins too. How bad is the damage. Do you need to buy just a new deck, or trucks and wheels too? You could always buy a black board. This is great because they cost half as much as a brand name board. Of course, you could always get a job if your old enough. My sister is getting $15 an hour at a resturant and she's 16!

(I think I might do coinlover's idea. I need extra cash and I never get tired of looking at coins. Double win!)

I would normally not say anything, but it seems some people are Coinlover's post seriously.

FIRST, show me a dealer or ANYONE else who will give you $4.50 as you walk off the street for a 1964 Kennedy half. And $1.50 is more like it for a 1965-70 half. IF you can get that - and I doubt it.

People (and I'm not accusing Coinlover here) have a tendancy to throw out prices that aren't all that accurate - they're just "off the top of the head" kind of remarks.

The other problem with the original post is that you have to buy TONS of half dollars to find a FEW 40% silver ones.

Once again, this is not knocking the post of Coinlover, but I just got concerned when it seemed that some might be taking it as something you could go out and do tomorrow....

By the way, I was skateboarding and collecting when I was your age. Me and nearly all of my skater freinds are in our mid-20's to mid-30's and don't skate anymore, but I still love coins.

I could be wrong, but I think coinlover does have someone who buys his halves from him at prices like that. Your 100% right though that finding that silver in the first place is much easier said than done.

when i made that post, i was HALF(pun intended:D) joking. its still an idea though, but a bunch of half dollars and then sell them for more than you paid which was face. $1.75 and $4.50 for halves are too high of a price, but dealers will still pay $1.50 for 40%ers and $4-$4.25, at least thats what my dealer does. i don't crh right now but i will when i'm a little older. there are some places around me that give that kind of money for silver. but again that is a possibility. if you like coins and need the money, thats for you!:D i know its hard to get money without a job. trust me, a couple years ago i had no job and thought i was rich with $5. now i make $50 a week. i don't even feel rich with $50 anymore! having a job kinof spoils the feeling of having money. if i were you i would cut grass or rake leaves for someone around you. or have your parents lend you the money and pay them back when you get a job. if you know someone that has a old skateboard, just tell them you'll give them $5 or so dollars for that old skateboard and take the parts you need off that and put that on yours. its alot cheaper that way. its used, but who cares! and if you sell your coins, you most likly not get what you paid for them if you sell to a dealer. only way i would sell my coins if i lost everything except the coins. well, good luck on getting some money! :hammer:

You gotta go with what your heart tells you here but think of this first please.

Will you be able to fix your skateboard in a month, 6 months, a year or even replace it?
If you sell your coins will you be able to replace them as easily?

Do you think you'll make a career of skateboarding? Do you think you'll be skateboarding at 60?
Do you think when you're 60 you'll be kicking yourself for selling your coins to fix a skateboard?

I've seen some good comments here. Bq sold some coins to buy his wife a diamond ring. Nice, she must be worth it and it probably opened up the door for buying more coins :O)

I have sold coins when times were rough - always hated it but when you have to do silly things like eat you just bite the bullet so you can bite a sandwich.

I hope to never be in those situations again but one never knows and I'd much rather sell to survive than to "play".

Guess I wouldn't sell my coins but it IS UP TO YOU.

    Bood luck

Though I agree she'll probably be coin collecting many years after she gives up the board, you still have to remember she's a young girl yet. Skateboarding is probably by far more fun and more important right now in her life. She needs to be a kid, not a serious collector at the moment. There's room for both, I understand. But, she'll have the rest of her life to enjoy the persuit of coins, and only a few to be a kid and enjoy the thrill of the board.

I say forget what we all think and do what you think is best. Whatever you decide, have fun!

I deal with APMEX on occasion. I live in Oklahoma City and do business there in person. APMEX's website clearly states the "Buy Price" for 90% silver (on August 11, 2007 it's currently $8.34 for each $1.00 worth of 90% silver which equals $4.17 for each 90% Half Dollar).

Why would you only offer $3.00 to someone if your "Buy Price" is clearly advertised and what does your "good mood" have to do with it? How much do you offer if you're in a bad mood?

I've brought quantities of silver into the store and have always received "Buy Price" regardless of whether the quantity is small or not, but I don't think I've ever dealt with you personally.

IMHO, you can always repair a skate board, but if your coins mean anything to you, I'd seek another way. You can always repair or replace a skateboard, but as some other learned collectors have stated, you may never replace the coins you have, or at least not cheaply. If we were talking about other issues, i.e.making the rent, buying food, or some other necessary thing, well you've got to keep your priorities. But for something like this, I'd keep the coins...but that's me.

I guess whenever i wrote that it came off in the wrong way. what i ment is if someone has (one) or just a few 90% coins i will give them 6X face as to if they have a larger quanity i will pay them (bag price) or close to. The point i was trying to make is that almost no dealer anywhere will give someone who walks off the street full bag price for coins if they just have a few coins so you wont always get $4.17 for one half dollar if you are roll searching. The reason they wont is because it would not be worth our time to help the customer and work with them and if we only make a few cents per coin, and if they only have a few coins we would actually be loosing money, im shure you know since you have been in before that we fill out a (yellow sheet) for every purchase and the time it takes to enter those also costs us money. I am sorry for any confusion this caused
