Really? In circulation, you say!?! That's pretty darned amazing! Nice one, too! Bean the Cat agrees. I don't award the "BeanWOW" GIF except in special circumstances. My Dad said he found Flying Eagle cents and Shield nickels in circulation. But that was back in the 1950s.
Thanks! Somewhere between 2000 and 2006. It was a convenience store near my job. I was coming back in a hurry to, what else, eat. I really didn't pay too much attention to it because it I was hungry but discovered it soon as I tossed it on the table with other coins. Thought, huh that's cool, really didn't know too much about them at the time.
This reminds me I need new flying eagle cents for my Indian head book. I don't even know if they are small letters or large letters for the 1858.
After about 60 years, I finally completed a "Red Book" Flying Eagle set. I'll leave the overdates and the pieces with wierd clash marks to the specialists. 1856 This is the "common variety" which was stuck sometime after 1856. It's graded PR-64 with an Eagle Eye sticker. 1857 This one is graded MS-65. This was my type coin for a while. 1858 Small Letters. This was my type coin for many years. I bought it at Stacks in the early 1970s. PCGS had the nerve or stupidty to send this back to me in a body bag many years ago for "artificial toning." NGC properly graded it MS-64. 1858 Large Letters. This is the more common 1858 variety, but I could not find "the right one" after I shopped the entire 2025 Winter FUN bourse. This one cropped up in an auction and sold for fair money, for once. It's graded MS-64. This white color was how the coins looked when they left the mint. People called them "nickels" until the 5 cent piece came along.
That eagle got on the reverse of the double eagle because Teddy Roosevelt admired the Flying Eagle Cent design. It was one of the previous designs that TR did not rate as "hidious."
