Here is another old purchase I am just getting around to sharing. It's very rare I get to add roman republics to my collection and I was lucky to win a long wanted type within my weekly budget. New on top. Bottom coin is the other reverse type I only care about for this moneyer. AR Denarius O: Bareheaded, bearded head of King Tatius right; SABIN downward behind; palm frond below chin. R: Tarpeia facing, buried to her waist in shields, with raised hands she tries to thrust off two soldiers who are about to cast their shields at her; star in crescent above; L•TITVRI in exergue. Rome Mint 3.75g 19mm Crawford 344/2b; Sydenham 699 L. Titurius L.f. Sabinus. (89 B.C.) AR Denarius O: Bare head of King Tatius right, SABIN downward behind, TA in monogram before; R: Two Roman soldiers running left, each bearing a Sabine woman in his arms, L·TITVRI in ex. Rome 19mm 3.87g Crawford 344/1a,RSC I Tituria 2, Sydenham 698a, SRCV I 249
These are GREAT Republicans Mr @Mat ! Great wear, some bankers marks, great history, continuing story, way cool! Congrats! Yeah, I know you are probly bored with them cuz they been sittin' around a bit...but these are really cool. I enjoy how many of the Republican Denarii had some cool scenes and stories behind them. Here are mine: RR Titurius Sabinus 89 BCE AR Den Tarpeia buried shields S 251 Cr 344/2a RR Titurius Sabinus 89 BCE AR Den Tatius Sabine rape S 249 Cr 344/1a
Beautiful coins guys. I still don't have one, LOL. Anyway, @Mat , you have a weekly budget? How is that working out? Is it easier to keep than a monthly budget? I might have to look into that, because the whole monthly budget thing for me has been a mess. My monthly budgets turn out to be suggestions to be ignored and nuked into oblivion.
LOL That sounds ominously familiar. Terrific Republicans @Mat!! Hmm, I was sure I picked up at least one of these types, but they seem to be missing from my photo library. Another 'senior moment' ???
L. Titurius L.f. Sabinus gets a lot of interest from his rape and execution coins but he also issued a more ordinary biga type.
LOL, Rape and Execution Prime-Time TV - news AND reality shows TODAY; Same for coins of the Ancients! Looks like we haven't changed...
Nice ones, Mat. Two reverses that I've always found intriguing. You can tell from his coin design choices that Sabinus was probably a peaceable, gentlemanly sort of guy .
Great pick up Mat. I still want to grab a Tarpeia reverse type. This coin really gave me problems photographing it but I think this one turned out good.
Great catch! This is the first RR silver mini-set I completed. I especially like Tarpeia's hair flying. I even bought the Augustus re-print. She must have used a setting gel for the second coin.
