Here is a 1916 D that came out of a collection I bought. What do you think of it? Real or fake?

    Thanks!

Solid 16-D. I own a contemporary very well done 16-D counterfeit and I see none of the signs of an added mintmark. Usually the counterfeiters will select better grade 16’s to add the phony mintmark to. That one looks solid to me.

It looks OK to me at a cursory glance, but I'll be the first to admit I am not really well-versed in the diagnostics of the fakes (mintmark shape, etc.)

    Get that puppy slabbed, ASAP!

I'm not seeing the triangular hole in the D that I expect - but I've also failed to see it in genuine specimens, so no opinion from me.

I knew there was something like that to do with the shape of the mintmark. I just couldn't remember what it was.

When the rims get worn flat the mintmark becomes flat and distorted. If that D had been added it wouldn’t be worn that flat.

How much was the collection? That coin costs a lot.

Compared to mine, it looks good. I agree that if it is that worn, the mint mark would give it away. Nice fine, congrats. Regards.

I paid $700 for the complete set (minus the 1942/41). That was when silver was at $110 an ounce. The 1921 and 1921 D are in G/AG condition. This was an eBay snipe. I would have a hard time with my conscience if I offered that amount to someone in person.

You did good. The 1916-D by itself would cost more than that. I sniped stuff too. It is all about timing.
