I was checking coins with my Cherrypickers' Guide and I think I found a variety. It is a 1945 Walking Liberty Half in Fine condition with (I think)missing initials. There is something where the initials should be, is it still an error? http://s192.photobucket.com/albums/z9/hamman88-photo/?action=view¤t=IMAG0003-1.jpg http://s192.photobucket.com/albums/z9/hamman88-photo/?action=view¤t=IMAG0002-1.jpg
Can't be struck through grease, the initials on the die are raised. Not likely an alteration because the initials in the coin are incuse so they would be hard to remove without creating a "hole" or depression in the coin. Missing initials are the result of polished dies. Since the initials are raised they are the highest thing on the coin and are the first thing ground away in the polishing.
I have one of them too. I had it in my selling collection that is untill I bought the cherrypickers guide. What can I say the book paid for itself allready!!
