This is my type coin for the $5 Indian. It's a decent enough Mint State coin for the type, but as a little extra bonus, it has a pedigree and a mint error. I chose the 1911 date because that's the year my paternal grandmother was born. Note the strikethrough error, which shows as a depressed area over the E DO in FIVE DOLLARS on the reverse. I am not sure what it was struck through; perhaps a piece of wood or fabric? Not sure what the foreign object was. But it's interesting.
Error coins in gold are quite scarce. The US Mint didn't like issuing "defective" coins into general commerce, but was especially sensitive about doing so with coins struck in gold. The damage their reputation could suffer at releasing gold coins that were underweight, or appeared to be, surely weighed on their minds.
That’s a really nice error for a gold coin! Errors in gold coins seem to be rare to me. Maybe it’s the lower mintages. Here’s my gold coin error. A clashed die with the entire Princess on the reverse.
Picked this one up last spring for my type set. Though it is not attributed on the slab, I thought the strikethrough on the reverse (DO in DOLLARS) was an added bonus.
Here's a pretty obvious strike thru on a Saint . . . And a $10 Indian with prominent strikes thru on both sides. I rarely see errors of any sort on $10 Indians.
