Going through some old coins I re-photographed this one, from Smyrna in Ionia, which features Homer on its reverse. They claim Homer came from there. I think this denomination is even called a homeraion or something like that. In any case, Homer's face is quite clear!

Post anything related to Homer or Ionia!

That certainly is a reverse more clear than usually seen on these. My favorite college professor used to explain that the Iliad and Odyssey were written by 'Homer or another Greek by the same name'. We know there were two cities named Smyrna close to each other but in different periods so I can deal with attributing the birth of a man whose reality is hard to pin down to a place similarly fleeting.

I didn't know that Homer was depicted on coins until AJ posted his. I have been on the look out for one ever since.

Not exactly scarce but less common are the ones from Kolophon. It was one of the other cities that claimed Homer as a native.

Nice coin Nick! I've been looking for a bust type of Homer since I started collecting. Here's one from Amastris, not mine.
