Hi CoinTalk! Long time no see! I was looking through some “cull” and damaged coins at my LCS, which they were selling at melt. I grabbed this one because it looked to me to possibly be a ragged clip. It even might have the Blakesley Effect. Or it’s just been cut off at the top. Let me know what you all think! Thanks, Soren
Could be. "Clipped" aren't actually ever clipped. That would be from the ragged edge of a stock sheet. The planchet was cut out from that area. Can you show a picture of the edge?
A straight clip is from the edge of the roll where planchets are made. A curved clip is from when the roll didn’t advance correctly and a planchet was cut in the same spot that another planchet was cut from. A ragged clip is from the beginning or the end of the roll. All clips are incomplete planchet errors. There is no clip error. Clips are the type of the error. Yours looks to be a ragged one. Nice find!
Not all clips are from an incomplete planchets. There are real clipped planchets that are called Strike Clips.
Thanks all for all of the input and comments! I really appreciate it! It sounds like you all agree it is likely a ragged clip. Apologies for the delay, it’s almost college finals season! Here are some more photos, including an edge photo. Let me know what you all think! It does have a bit of unfavorable iron staining on it. Not sure how to remove if it’s possible. Depending on the value, I could possibly send it to NCS and NGC, but I doubt it’s worth sending to a TPG!
Personally, I like it just the way it is, rough and rugged, a great looking coin with real personality.
Not worth sending to a TPG. Maybe buy some MS70 and put it in there. If its not tone on the coin, that rust coloration might come right off.
