Bidding in exile: Goldberg Auction 96 wins

I live 150 yards from the Yuba River levee in Northern California. I was visiting my brother, who lives about 100 miles from me, when on February 12 nearly 200,000 people were ordered to evacuate the area threatened by the Oroville Dam, which included me. So I bid in Goldberg Auction 96 in absentia, before returning home on February 15.

My first winning bid was on lot 1535. These types used to be listed together under "Siculo-Punic" before scholars began designating them as being from specific mints, e.g. Entella, Lilybaion, and Panormos.

An early issue with attractive old cabinet toning and a pedigree to 1894 made this a good choice to add to my Magna Graecia collection.

I enjoy Carthaginian coinage, and have several AR, EL, and AE issues in varying conditions. However, I have no AR Siculo-Punic issues!

 

John. Glad you didn't get flooded out! I live right on the Sacramento (or about 1/4 mile from it). Lots of flooding, the golf course right on the river is underwater. Naturally I had to make a trip up to Shasta Dam to see how things were going. I've never seen it this full, and they are releasing a LOT of water:

All that rain is dipping south of us here in the Pacific Northwest. We had 7 inches in the last few days and are finally getting a break. We have some hills that are on the move. Good luck to you guys down south.

@ancientnut and @Andres2 , both of your coins are excellent. Beautiful. Carthage is an area that I have begun to focus on (they were in major conflicts with Rome). I am inspired for my future targets! Nice!

 

I really like that first coin and can hardly wait to see the other 95 you won. OK my first thought was that 96 was a lot of wins from one sale but I soon woke up and realized that the 96 was the auction number. 30 years ago I returned home from work and my then 13 year old daughter told me that a dealer had called and asked if it was OK to send me a package of 194 Septimius Severus denarii on approval. We both knew that I specialized in the COS II Emesa coins made in 194 AD so she knew I would love to see them. The thought of seeing even a small group of the then less common than now coins was a thrill! When the (heavy!) box arrived, I found 194 count assorted Septimius Severus denarii of which only a couple were Emesa coins. Most were Rome mint commons in nothing special condition. Jumping to conclusions can be expensive when you figure what I had to pay to return them Registered mail.

I will be looking forward to seeing the rest of your wins even if there are fewer than 95 to go.

 

WOW, Trout fishing has be outstanding in the River now! Whenever they release water through the dam near the property I have in AR, the Trout are just excellent to catch! And yummy!
