I completely disagree with every single post that says I should just accept the fact that people will try to scam me, that it is totally fine that people lie about me and misrepresent the truth to intentionally scam the system, and that it's totally fine that PayPal provides almost zero customer service/protection to sellers.

Should I be prepared for it? Yes.

Should I expect it to happen every once in a while? Yes.

Should I chalk it up to people being people and not stand up for myself? Absolutely not.

For everyone's information, after all is said and done I will make approximately $5 after fees/shipping. All I was trying to do was break even with this particular coin.

Okay, if we want to pry open the Pandora's Box of Belligerance, let's rumble.

In WHAT UNIVERSE is whether a Franklin MIGHT upgrade to a FBL justification for a premium price? Not in any one I live in. Either it is or it ain't.

You forgot the X factor: toning premium.

Which is utter nonsense in and of itself. The absolute top any prudent collector in my neck of the woods would pay for that coin is MAYBE 50 bucks. If that.

I can take a blast white roll of Franklins and make them look EXACTLY toned just like this coin in an afternoon, WITH the fingerprint or without - you choose.

I say "might" because the opinions of the TPG are never 100% from day to day. So literally anything is possible. Hell, it could have come back as a Matte Proof...

It may be utter nonsense to you, but there is a market for anything toned these days. Eventually it may all come crashing down, but it hasn't yet.
Besides, sellers can ask whatever they want. I have consigned coins listed for ridiculous prices that have been up for nearly 10 months now. The consignor doesn't care that they haven't sold. He overpaid, and wants the next guy to overpay!

Hmm. Sounds like signs of a topped market to me.

Yeah, the rare coin market has been down for a couple years now IMO.

I'm speaking of toners specifically. The biggest coin con ever.

If it's pretty, then it's pretty. People liking pretty things isn't a con, it's just preference. Kind of like how @GDJMSP prefers coins without clashing and die cracks and I love them because I think it adds interest.

Not allowing returns after an insane amount of time would be a good start.

Just checking - are you seriously suggesting the toning on the piece that is the subject of this thread / interesting rant and the word "pretty" have an intersection set? Wow.

Did you let the OP's picture load? I'll buy that for some, any toning is good toning, although I find that moronic. But "pretty"? Nuh uh. Ain't buyin' it. You ARE aware there still is a term still floating around spelled "unattractive toning", right?

Kurt, all I am saying is that buyers like different toning. In the case of this one, I think the obverse toning is nice and worth a little premium. How much, I don't know. The reverse.... uh no.

This seems to be like about anything in life. If the process to correct the problem is so onerous, most of us won't go through the time and emotional hassle to make things right. I consider my time as money and from all the phone calls, pictures, emails, etc. that were involved; should I ever encounter a situation like the OP's; I would just take the path of least resistance and return the coin.

Just wondering, OP how many hours do you think you invested in this process of getting resolution to your problem?

More than was financially reasonable, that's for sure. Of course, I was working on an upcoming auction at the same time during most of the phone calls, so it wasn't completely dead time.

But I'd rather put work in and "make the world right" than let someone bully me and get away with it.

Kudos to you for being the guy who pushed back and got a satisfactory resolution! One of my local coin dealers won't even sell on Ebay because of the "stacked deck".

Glad it worked out for you, though I think your post may have had the unintended consequence of proving that it's just not worth it!

I'm not disputing any of your comments and although small claims court does not require a lawyer, do you think it would be worth the lawyer's fees to pursue this considering the value of the coin. also, proving fraud, libel (or liable) or defamation of character is extremely difficult to prove in a court of law. IMHO it wouldn't be worth it. I'd just block the buyer.

You know, I'm pretty sure I had someone do that to me once...
