In my mother's collection I've come across a 1993S Kennedy Half Dollar and a 1943 walking Liberty half dollar. I can't seem to find any explanation of why they are gold and if there is any value in keeping them.
The Kennedy half has a very rough edge to it.
    Thanks in advance

I'm curious to know why the Kennedy has a rough edge yet the Walker doesn't.

I stopped trying to guess long ago without pictures. People all have a different way of describing things

These gold plated coins are all over the place. Gold plated state quarters are a favorite of the TV coin salesmen.

I hate to see a Walking Liberty treated that way.

Sadly enough, when many newbies see "gold plated" they think they have something of value. The same goes for the gold foil stamps used in first day covers. More sad is the fact that these coins are technically ruined by the TV hawkers and at great expense to the buyers. And first day covers have so little value also but come at quite a cost.

Breaks my heart to see the Walker treated like that, one of my favorite coins. And it looks like it had plenty of detail left and would have looked much better, original and in someone's Dansco.
