Our lost coins

Was just casually browsing coins when I came across one type in particular. It was a silver denaro of Genoa, the one with the tower on it, and in the name of Conrad III. It made me think of my own coin of this type that I had. It had pretty decent detail and on top of that I improved the coin by cleaning it a little. Unfortunately it went missing, sometime last year I believe. Somehow took me a couple of months to realize this but as soon as I did I searched high and low for it around my house, without any success. I am 99% sure it is in my house, so I still have some hope that I will come across it someday. I never took a photo of it so I can't show you what it looks like but you can always Google or search the type here on CT to see this coin type (it wouldn't really be the same for me to post a random example in place of my missing coin).

So, what are your coins that are currently missing/lost?

No freaking clue to be honest.

Heck, I really do not know what I own really. I keep buying pillar dollars thinking "I always wanted one of these". A few months ago going through stuff and found 5 in all.

 

I have one coin I cannot find to save my life. A Septimius Severus Drachm, I know it's somewhere in my room. Must have knocked it off the desk or something but I just can't find it.

 

Several years ago I bought a truly unsearched lot of walking Liberty half dollars for spot price. I paid about 3x face so I think it was about 25 years ago. While searching them, I assembled a pretty complete date set & gleaned one mint state coin dated 1920. Wow. I kept that one separated from the lot & remember placing it on the top shelf behind me. I never saw it again. I searched those thousands of half dollars over & over again but never found it. I believe it accidently got pushed to the back of the shelf & dropped behind the wall someplace. Ooops.

Once I found a 1961 double die half dollar that I forgot I had purchased. The plan was to get it slabbed & it just got forgotten for years. I found it & sold it for a big chunk of cash which promptly was spent on an ancient coin & a vacation trip.

Thus far, I've only temporarily misplaced ancient coins. Nothing has yet been lost like the mint state Walking Liberty.

 

I haven't lost anything...that I know of.

 

I have lost a Terina Stater that I have an old picture of. I was looking for it to re-shoot it and can't find it. I have had this coin since the early 1990s so it is killing me that I can't find it. I have the terrible feeling it fell on the floor in the bank security room while I was looking through my SDB. I am super paranoid about this happening so I hope it is just buried in all the paperwork and junk in there.

Never lost a coin, ever. Not even as a kid when I got into collecting did I ever lose a coin.

My dad is an a organized hoarder and I ended up being one growing up. Now I'm just very organized.

I'm like him, when even a candy wrapper moves a few centimeters, I know it, lol.

 

This is the reason I always check the floors when I go to SDB... I get so paranoid

I lost 2 tiny coins.I hope and still believe that I stuck them somewhere in my room 2 weeks ago. Fortunately I already posted them here. If I find them back, I'll be very happy. If not, I'll just be happy no matter.

 

the horror, anger and depression of losing....the relief, elation and happiness of finding... who said coin collecting was boring...

 

I distinctly remember pushing a Morgan dollar into a crevice between a wall and the floor when I was a child. I keep telling my parents I need to knowk out a piece of the wall to find it. It was my grandfathers. The other silver dollar he had was a nice 1921 Peace Dollar, so chances are he held onto the Morgan because it was a key date.

 

It might be fun to use a metal detector along the wall & see if you can pin-point the location of that silver disk.

 

I'm a dummy:

The mailman arrived just before I was heading to the mall (which is a place I almost NEVER go to) and the mailman delivered a Trajan tet from Tyre. I was excited and wanted to look at it but I needed to go so I put the coin in its flip in my pocket.

You see where this is going.

It must have fallen out when I was getting my keys out or my wallet, and it must have wound up on the floor in Marshall's or Old Navy or one of several parking lots. I checked all those places with no luck.

I've always wondered if the person who found it believed what was written on the tag, and if it's at all appreciated.

The coin is holed so it wasn't a big hit financially, but holed is the only way I'm likely to afford the coin and I haven't seen another with any susceptibility to my purchasing power, so it hurts.

By liking people's posts I am expressing sympathy for your lost coins, not liking the fact you lost them. I think most people already understand that.

 

I have done EXACTLY that! Except, I was VERY fortunate that it was in my office. I found my Denarius under my chair, and thought... cripes...

 

I lost a poor condition very common Constantine follis in a dark parking lot waiting for the car pool. I was bored waiting, so had pulled this "pocket piece" out to look at it and for some reason I had the car door open when it slipped out of my fingers. Could not find it, so I had the "bright" idea that I could pull the car back and turn on the headlights. I reversed into a curb, scraped against a post and did about $500 dollars in body damage. Never found my $1.00 coin.

 

Because of this post I went on the hunt and recovered my Gallienus VOTA ORBIS that had been missing for some time. I am still missing my COL NEM, which is more important to me.

 

Fortunate indeed--I'm glad you found your coin! Now I don't even open the envelope if I'm not ready to sit down and look at the coin then and there.
