And that was my thinking when I saw that reverse 37 years ago. How often does one get a nice heraldic eagle reverse on a dime for $2?
No matter what year it is, I'd still call it a 3 digit piece. On an 1800, one of the more common dates, but even then, you cut FR-2 wholesale bid in half and you have $275. The fact that $2 bought you a Draped Bust coin still blows my mind. I haven't even gotten a Capped Bust for that!
I bought another lot of Jefferson Nickels from the guy who sold me the 1945-D partial roll. This time it was 36 nickels from 1977-1979 for $11 which equals 30 cents per nickel, and I found this. The 77-D is a $25 coin in MS65FS, but jumps over $100 in MS66FS. I am going to gamble my profit by spending it on the grading fee try to get an MS66 5FS out of NGC. Wish me luck!
1956 Jefferson Nickel NGC PF68*: $35.50 from Great Collections. Added a sweet 280 points to my registry set.
This one is Details but even an F-12 bids at $60. On this one, $30 sealed it - and this was on GreatCollections where the bidders literally paid $500 for a 1906 proof details Indian cent while overlooking this'n.
Yup. It was somewhat startling to see a heraldic eagle staring back at me, I grabbed it immediately. The date is obvious from the reverse. Look above the eagle. This coin has also been posted here before.
Morgan was $39 and Peace was $37. Not certain why someone spent the money to get these slabbed. But easy buy at the price.
1/8 ounce monarch Metals LEGO $6.48 The 1 ounce was $52 New coin store so I'm showing my support and I didn't have any silver LEGOS
Bought less than an hour ago on Ebay for $36. Looks to be fine details, old cleaning, but F-12 bid is $85 so why not.
$16. For my Kennedy collection I wanted an "enhanced unc" finish example coin. Not sure quite yet how I feel about the look of these coins, but I am going to stew on it for a bit. (I dont have it in hand yet)
Not bad for $41. I've always had good luck with Kennedy halves on GC, must translate to this coin too.
Not bad coins for the price, but yeah, definitely not worth the cost to get them graded. My guesses? 1. Was trying to finish a registry set 2. Needed more coins to get a bulk grading deal, and just grabbed what they could find around 3. Thought they were more valuable/higher grade than they actually were I often see a lot of graded coins worth less than the grading fees, and it's usually one of these three reasons as to why it was graded.
I recently bought this one for $16 including BP and shipping, because of the wild obverse die clash. Price guide is $8 and whoever submitted it to PCGS also paid for TrueView. Maybe they thought PCGS would attribute the die clash (part of your #3 perhaps). I have submitted coins to ANACS that also weren't really worth it, because they were my grandfather's, so that's another - sentimental reasons.
