I was wondering if anyone ever proposed extending the presidential dollars to include Carter, and found this: https://www.congress.gov/bill/119th-congress/senate-bill/633/text This, if it ever passed, would just indefinitely extend the presidential dollar series, covering any president not already honored, and their spouse, within 3 years after the time they died, rather than requiring a separate piece of legislation for every president. But last I checked it hadn't even been voted on in the Senate, it looks like. But it's possible it might be re-introduced (or another bill that does essentially the same thing might be) eventually. Anyway, just thought it was interesting. This might be old news though, and so far no action has been taken on it.
Coins are pork in the budget, paying artists fee's Etc. is expensive. I am hoping for more out of our politicians.
The Mint is one of the few government programs that's actually a net positive to the budget. This might not be true for each individual coin program but the net activities of the Mint not only funds itself, but produces a net profit. They sell their circulation issues to Federal Reserve and their other products to the general public for more than they cost to make. Not saying every coin they make is one I'd want to buy, but the Mint is not a drain on the budget; quite the opposite.
I appreciate your research. I was wondering about this too. Maybe this will be acted on in 2027 since next year is speculated to be a big year with the sesquicentennial. I hope so—I’d like to see this series continue.
The precedent was already set when they made one for George H. W. Bush in 2020, so I doubt they'll just stop there. I like the idea that they'll just extend it automatically as needed rather than requiring a separate piece of legislation for each president. Without getting too "political"about it the Bush dollar didn't really have any pushback passing through Congress so I don't expect this will either. It's not high priority atm with other things going on, but it's pretty likely it should pass eventually. I do sometimes think there's too many modern mint products these days but I never had a problem with this series. One of the better ideas they've had recently IMO.
I have zero interest in moderns or paying premiums for coins really not worth more than melt, especially when the US Mint is mighty proud with their pricing.
I shutter to think (as I’ve never calculated it) the price gold and/or silver need to reach just to break even.
Some of the stuff may be valuable in your great grandchildren's life time , especially the stuff that has limited production. The crazy thing is that 95% of them will grade MS69 or better unless you get ahead of the game and turn them into pocket pieces, they could be worth more..
