Just looking through a few comm sets and noticed that the 2001 capitol visitors center 3 coin proof sets are hard to find. Are people sitting on these, broke out the gold and sold or are they just not that popular?
You might want to look up the mintages on those coins. If memory serves they are among the lowest there was/is.
Redbook doesn't show mintage of the 3-coin set but the US mint (code V96) shows they sold 21,532. One set currently available for $599.99 from Black Mountain Coins. USA - Capitol Visitor Center - (3) Coin Set - 2001P & W - Proof - Mint Issued Box & COA
With melt for a $5 gold at (checks Coinflation) $1029, I'm thinking you won't have much luck actually ordering from that listing.
Almost all of the value is in the melt price for the $5 gold. I suppose with silver prices headed toward moon as opposed to the next solar system with gold, the silver dollar will add $40 or so to the price. When the gold price was not insane, these sets did sell for a premium because the mintage was not that high. If you take a look at the half dollar, I think that it is one of the all time ugliest U.S. coins. When I received my set from the mint, I thought that my coin was defective until I really looked at it.
I can't say I'm surprised. Maybe this will motivate them to keep their online listings updated. Edit: or not - looks like they still have quite a few silver modern commemoratives listed well below spot (1982 GW half dollars for $15.99, various dollars for $31.99). I'm not going to try to take advantage, although I'm sure they'd still be making a profit over what they paid.
Gold is going up so fast these days, you really have to lock on a deal and get the seller to honor it. The gold price has killed whatever numismatic value virtually all of the modern gold commemorative coins had.
Thanks for all the responses. I was shocked at how few sets there were out there. Usually there's a few of them on ebay, coinbook, etc but I couldn't find any..other than the one I have. I guess I'll keep it.
The gold issue (UNC.) is the rarest coin in the series topping out at 6,700 and change. The rest of the coins in the series have high mintages. The three coin sets I have no figures for but when you factor in the aggregate (like I always do) the sets themselves may be rare, but the coins contained within are not.
Received this from the coin store that had the set posted for $599.99 and then cancelled: We are emailing to inform you that we were unable to locate the USA Capitol Visitor Center 3 Coin Set 2001P & W Proof Mint Issued Box & COA for your order, due to Hurricane Helene and discrepancies in our inventory. We have issued you a full refund and sincerely apologize for any inconvenience. We appreciate your understanding. How do they know if I understand or not? Just kidding, but it's obvious what happened.
“We apologize for OUR inconvenience that you would have bought this set for UNDER MELT which have been VERY inconvenient for us.
