So... in my visit to the LCS today, I got to take a very close look at a '64 large motto 2-cent piece. It has a very clearly repunched date that doesn't match any of the pcgs listings. The doubling is very apparent on the 4, but also on the 6. Edit: The 4 is doubled so much that there is a 2nd crossbar. I'm having a difficult time locating anything resembling this RPD, so I thought I'd ask here if there are other RPD varieties that PCGS doesn't list. If I had to guess a grade, I'd venture to say it's a MS-63RB so it's not like it's some silly PMD. Anyways, what's the verdict on these RPD varieties? Only 4 for 1864 LM?
No, wasn't able to get any pictures. But I'm considering going back tomorrow to see if I can make an offer for it that exceeds the greysheet listing. Maybe then I can get him more motivated to sell it? Edit: greysheet listing for MS-63RB, not taking into account the RPD Edit again: I rarely visit on a Saturday, so that's going to hopefully be a noticeable difference. Not likely, but a guy can hope, right?
If memory serves, there are more than one 1864 copper coin which has a repunched date. I had an Indian cent that showed in high school. I’ll see what I can find in my books tomorrow.
Kevin Flynn's The Authoritative Reference on Two Cent Coins C2011, lists 24 business strike RPDs for the 1864 LM. If you can obtain close, focused photos of the date, I will attempt to match up to the photos in the book.
I was able to get this coin today, so I can take as many pictures of it as my heart desires. These will almost certainly suffice, but let me know if you want any additional images and I'll get them uploaded. Thank you! There also appears to be very slight doubling, aside from the Longacre doubling, on the reverse throughout "United States of America" and the top serif of the D seems to have been polished away.
The closest match to photos and written description is RPD-007 described as follows: "Repunched 1 seen above the base and top of the 1. Repunched 8 seen above the middle and top of the 8. Repunched 64 seen above the middle and top of the 64." The attribution is reinforced by the reverse description: "Incomplete D. Very strong clash marks seen below CENTS. STATES OF AMERICA show retooling" Your coin has the incomplete D and I think I see clash marks as described. I can't see tooling in your photo. Obverse description: "Very small die crack from top of the 1 west to the rim. Small die crack from the left banner edge to the left arrow tip through the bottom of IN G. Small die crack through the top of UST of TRUST. Die crack from the right bottom most leaf through the right feathers to the rim." I don't see any of those die cracks in the photos but they might be visible under magnification in hand and under different lighting. Maybe the die crack at UST. There is no listing of a DDO or DDR that includes this RPD.
The clash marks and die cracks are definitely there, but those are more easily seen with the loupe. And perhaps I mistook the retooling as doubling? The "M" in America looks like it must have been recut or something, and I just saw several letters that seemed to have a 2nd ridge along their edges so I assumed it was just very minor doubling. But thank you for identifying this for me! It sounds like a perfect match for the RPD-007 according to your description.
