World Coins: Your Newest Acquisition!

Fresh off the auction block for $11.11 with $5 buyer's fee. So a bit over price guide ($8.40 according to coinsandcanada) but I immediately noticed the strong die clash in the portrait and figured I might get it cheap. I was hungry for something new and I'll spend under $20 on something cool any time. They generically call these a "hearing aid" variety. The clash is from the beaver's foot and the log.

A good buy at a local metals buyer that also sells some numi stuff. They’re not much more than everyday coins but the purchase prices were The Excellent.

I bid a fortune on two Dutch East Indies VOC ducatons in the Kuenker auction this week. Unfortunately they went for around twice as much yet... 194K USD for the first and 125K for the second. Completely insane, multiples from the previous record VOC ducaton sale just earlier this year.

I walked away in frustration and ignored my remaining small bids on low-value coins but found out today that my pre-bid for one actually won.



You can see the reverse has some adjustment marks. When a planchet was slightly over weight, the mint would file the planchet. It takes away a bit from the eye appeal, but adds an interesting historical note.

 

Lovely coin and a nice consolation prize. I was also outbid on a lot in that auction - the 1644 Batavia 1/2 stiver, one of the finest specimens I've ever seen. It was the only coin I was bidding on, but ended up going for a couple increments above my max.

 

I have a sub-suite in my collection of coins that depict beehives. The reverse
of this Jeton depicts a beehive.

That's so cool. I've seen a handful of coins with beehives on them and played with the thought that they'd be a nice collection area. Any pics of your collection?

 

Yup, that's the one. They were cast, not struck, and the quality tends to be pretty poor. This one is superb. I bid €370 and it hammered for €400. I think that was still a fair price, just beyond my means at the moment. I tell myself there will always be more opportunities in the future.

 

Photographing the collection is a long term goal. Most of the coins that I have with beehives are Conder tokens. I have others that are Civil War store cards, Civil War Patriotic tokens, and Hard Times tokens. Then there are items such as agricultural awards and medals. And of course we can go back a couple of millennia to find this. In total I have at least sixty coins that depict beehives.
