Should I have this "conserved" or just send it in to be graded?

Wanted to know peoples opinions, also I posted the same coin in another thread what's it worth, and not one reply said what a person felt it was worth, so if anyone wants to put out a figure I would appreciate it. A reason for the suggestion would also be appreciated.

What is that plastic around it? Does it already have a grade?
No need to have it conserved. It has to be problem free in order to have conservation done.
Your coin is not problem free. Don't waste your money.

I don't see anywhere on their forums that state that. Obviously there's a better chance of a straight grade afterwards if it wasn't in a details slab to begin with but I don't believe they limit it to straight graded holders. If they do they aren't clear about it on their websites

 

That's weird, I don't see any problem with it besides the weak strike, but if you say so. Also like baseball said 'x' details is a grade. Yes it's in a self slab to protect it, as if it's MS it could be worth between 30 and 50k.

AFAIK any coin can be conserved. However, I have heard cases where NCS may say the coin cannot be helped or they don't wish to attempt a conservation as the coin may not come out attractive. IGC will conserve any coin for free when requested. I have no info on PCGS or ANACS.

I'm not seeing the problem you see. Where is it? Anyway, conservation will not increase the value of the coin.

 

Is this a VAM thing? Numismedia says the 1899-O is perfectly ordinary all the way through MS grades -- yeah, $25K for MS68, but even with my limited grading skills I'm pretty sure this one wouldn't make that.

MS 62 auctions for 22,000 MS 64 50,000, I have no idea what it's worth if it is MS with such a god awful strike.

But should I have it conserved is the main thing? If I have it conserved could it kill the value? Is it worth the risk to have it conserved or should I get it graded and let the next guy worry aboot it.

Any horror stories from anyone about using conservation and then the coin that looked mint came back details harshly cleaned after the tarnish was removed? I know tarnish makes the smaller marks disappear, but I'm more worried about logistics like, if the coin comes back worth 50k you have to pay a grand for the conservation don't do it, or that sort of thing.

 

Yeah if you saw it in person you would think fake. It looks as if the press broke down, and someone was hitting the dies with a hammer to keep production going. Or maybe an adjustment strike that got away..

 

I will pay that fee all day long for any coin of mine they grade at 50k

 

Look at the wear on the hair above the ear. Not even close to MS or 20k plus. Numerous scratches will give it a details grade. Not worth grading or preserving.

 

Pretty sure the hair above the ear isn't wear. I've seen morgans graded MS with the hair looking like that. For that to be wear it would have to be in 30 condition.

 

Scratches and a details grade are quite possible.
