Just wondering what some of you all think this coin in this auction. I was just wondering how some of you all would grade this coin. It says MS60 in the title(no way), it says choice(no way) - I think it is a nice coin, but can't figure out what I would grade it. The details are nice, but the rubs(scratch?) across the neck really detracts from the coin for. I want to say AU50 (all I think about are the little rubs and the neck) but the details look a little stronger. Maybe it is just the pictures.

By the way I am not bidding on the coin - the pictures are not that good and may not show the actual color of the coin. In the auction it says "best viewed in a dim room" - but hey I have found if I squint hard enough all coins look nice. :) Just looking for some opinions on the coin.

Also, did anybody see the nice set of MS64 IHC someone has listed individually? Too bad they did not put better pictures on the coins - of course I think the seller listed them a little high. One of the things I like about heritage are the pictures - almost always really clear.

I really think that this coin could go Au-58.

May I ask why you think so? To me it is too hard to see the surfaces of the coin with the picture, but your eyes could be better than mine. I have seen some of the AU coins on heritage and they are certainly nice.

I'd say if it is in fact uncirculated then it's grade would be MS-63. If it's seen some circulation then AU-58. I don't know where MS-60 comes from...

He does not say it IS MS-60.

Under item specifics he or she has it listed as uncirculated.

I have bought several items from this seller. He's a good guy and has a good return policy.
He grades to EAC standards (which explains the MS60 comment), but is a bit liberal.
He has good coins occasionally, but this is not one of them. It looks to have been recolored or otherwise messed with.

This coin is a tough one. I think it is an N-11, but I could be wrong, as I had some difficulty with this piece.

The even color makes me think that this coin could be recolored, maybe in an effort to disguise the mark running horizontally across the neck (I'm not saying the seller did this though). I would say that the coin has 58 or 60 details, just can't tell if it has any rub from the pics. The hair seems to have some striking weakness. By EAC standards, I would net the coin down to 50 for the horizontal mark and the black spot below the eye. However, if the color is artificial, I would further net it to 40 or 45 probably.

Yes the seller does have a good return policy and I have bid on several of the coins that have been offered up.

I did not think about the coin being recolored - the picture makes it hard to see anything. I was really trying to figure how to grade this coin, because my first impression did not seem right. And it sounds like it wasn't.

    Thanks for all the comments.

I know precisely zilch about large cents but I do know that I stay away from auctions with pics as dark as that.

So do I - I know I might miss some good coins, but even with a good return policy there is too much of a hassle.

Here's one of the coins I purchased from him:

Not original, but still a nice copper. As long as you price this into your bid you'll come out OK.

Also, I've found him honest about his coins -- so if you have some concern, just (nicely!) ask him a question...Mike

Even if not original, its still a nice, eye appealing coin that is market acceptable in my eyes.

I am fairly certain this coin has been harsly cleaned and retoned. I would personally avoid it.

It has nice eye appeal, and should be worth considering bidding

One concern I would have is that dark high sharpness grade cents from the 20's seem to often have even fine porosity over the whole surface and these pictures would not show it.
