Struck on a damaged planchet. The surfaces exhibit lines from rolling of the strip, and are entirely original. Note how some of the lines turn to follow the metal flow into voids as the coin was struck. I have a half eagle struck similarly.
Ordinarily, I might be inclined to agree with you, but the bottom loop of the 2nd "8" and the loop of the "5" appear to have been pushed to the right leaving a build-up of metal. I think it is, at least in part, PMD. Chris
Nice close up. I believe it's PMD. With all of the metal flow happening when the coin is struck, I don't think you would get such even lines between the field and gouged areas. Note the high points on the second 8 and 5. I don't think metal would flow up into these higher relief areas when the pressure gradients would favor flow into the lower "defective" areas.
It looks like PMD to me but ToughCOINS makes a very convincing argument. Please have it graded by PCGS or NGC, confirm it's a damaged planchet, and then sell it to me cheap. Seriously. No, just kidding. (No, seriously.)
hee hee hee, ok... it's a VAM 1D so it will be going to ANACS for verification. I'll let you know when it gets back. I'm going to guess it's MS63 ish. Thought I'd run it by you gents before I sent it....of course I want to believe it's a mint error, I'm just going to send it and think happy thoughts.....I'll post when I get it back. Thanks everyone for your input! Dawg, I'll get you a price when I know for sure hee hee hee
Thanks my friend! I'm hoping for MS65 VAM 1D Planchet Error, maybe I'll post a full pic of the obv and rev tonight when I get home from work. Play the "guess the grade game"
I know I said I'd post full pics tonight, but just happen to have them on my thumb drive, these aren't the best pics. It does have more luster in hand.....enjoy!
