@PamR Trivia question - would you know why the Southeast Asian country of the Philippines used the terminology of CENTAVOS and PESO as a description of the denomination during those years? Hint.. Centavo is Spanish for Cent and Peso is Spanish for Dollar.
Philippines/ Spanish Rulers AV 4 Pesos 1868/58 Manila Mint Queen Isabella II 1833-68 Spain would loose the 1898 Spanish-American War/ result US grabbed Guam/ Puerto-Rico/ Philippines and Cuba. The US Battleship "Maine" was blown up in Havanna Harbour/ US blamed Spain. William Randolph Hearst printed that false story to ramp up war hysteria. It is now known that Spain was not responsible.

He was proud of his roots as so am I. He was proud his dad was from Spain and mother Italy. But yes I have read it now. American involvement in the Philippines began in 1898, when the island territory was ceded to the United States by the Spanish empire at the conclusion of the Spanish-American War. The following year, 1899, an insular government was established by the United States Congress which allowed a degree of Filipino participation under a governor-general appointed by the US President. Over the following decades, the Philippines were granted expanding degrees of self-governance until 1946 when, after the expulsion of the Japanese during World War II, full independence was achieved.
