Hello- I am not very familiar with different kinds of mint errors, but I came upon this weird 1980 dime which has absolutely no trace of reeding on its edge. It doesn’t appear that the edge has worn smooth, it looks as if there has never been any reeding at all on the coin. Also, the edge also is disproportionately thick compared the the rest of the planchette. Is this some kind of minting error, or just some weird uneven wear? Thanks.
Like @Spark1951 said, it's been "spooned". The reeded edge is created when a coin is struck, so this had to have happened after it left the mint.
Imagine spending 10's and 100's of hours banging the sides of a dime with a spoon and it's ultimately worth nothing. Wouldn't building a machine to do that, much like a rock tumbler smoothen and polishes rocks, be easier? And getting that dime distorted all the way around so perfectly evenly round by hitting it with a spoon is beyond accurate. Talk about standing around watching paint dry.
I could see someone sitting around, watching tv, tap-tap-tapping their coin, similar to a little worry stone. Of course, unless they lived alone, they may not survive long, that non-stop tapping would drive their roomie berserk! I may have to try that; see how long I can go before the wife threatens me with unmentionable bodily damage. If you don't hear from me for a while you'll know why.
Get out of the box. You’re totally forgetting that the person who did this may be autistic. Which means for them it’s all about the journey, not the destination.
