Odd color, unless that's an artifact of the imaging; doesn't even look like silver. You can do better.
They damage it deliberately to draw attention away from the diagnostics, or to cover them. Don't forget, this isn't about scoring big from one buyer; it's about rooking a hundred or more of them at lower prices. Bigger money usually has a more discerning eye.
I agree that nothing looks right, and SuperDave point of the dings being a distraction from what is to my eye a fake . I wouldn't want it .
I totally believe this is a genuine coin. Real deal, but chewed up and damaged. I don't have the Dick Graham book, but the wear pattern on both sides is 100% correct. Everything looks right about it to me. It's scanned, so you cannot rely on color as a diagnosis point.
This type of porosity makes it look cast. Weak denticles on the rim are another sign of possible casting. Weak and mushy devices like the stars and reverse letters also suggest casting. I would not condemn it on the weak devices alone but with the other deficiencies, I believe it's fake. I bet the rim shows signs of a seam.
It's entirely possible; the images here were too small to be sure either way. Here are the full-size images from the (ended) Ebay auction:
I looked at that coin (and others) and noticed one odd marker. In LIBERTY, the left-hand serifs on the T are diagonal. Images in other US catalogs show the side of the serif straight up and down, without exception. But that is minor enough to merely be a Breen variety (I don't have his book).
I *think* that's damage. Heritage has 63 of these attributed; I just looked at all of them to try to match up the die cracks on the obverse of the coin here. Their existence is encouraging; they should at least eliminate a transfer die as I doubt one could copy the delicate cracks so accurately. I found nothing similar at Heritage, which is no guarantee, of course. GR-6 has a similar crack under the bust, but this coin has one between the first two right stars which doesn't exist on GR-6 and if this is a later state than I saw illustrated, then there should be a more prominent crack left of the bust tip.
