Obv. IMP CAESAR TRAIAN HADRIANVS AVG Laureate head right, draped on left shoulder. Rev. DAC PARTHICO PM TR P COS PP S C (looks like there is even S C ending) Concordia standing left, holding patera and cornucopia the reverse legend is only on this dupondius seen below http://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-134130 2.65 gr 19 mm Hadrian Denarii do not have standing Concordia. How would you categorize this coin?
Congrats Eric, never seen a fouree of Hadrian before, do you own more ? Must be rare , I'll guess ? and first year of his reign as emperor , people had probably no idear how the new denarii looked like of their new emperor.
yes indeed http://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=5729 http://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=5728
Nice addition to your collection, Eric. As for the reverse. Many fourees have reverses that never appears on "official" coinage.
I can't offer any clarification....but.... I love cool, unusual and interesting coins!!! At the right price, of course
I do not believe that coin is fourree but you would have to cut it in half to convince me so let it drop. You can't say Hadrian and fourree without having to look at mine. The second is just a core not made as a fourree should have been in that day but more like the Limes coins of the next century. The first is a fourree brockage. Got one?
This is really interesting. My first thought was that this had to be mule, with an obverse of Hadrian and a reverse of Trajan, Aelius, or Antoninus Pius. But there are no aurei or denarii from Vespasian to Commodus with a reverse inscription matching "DAC ... PCOS ..." when I look through the inscription indices in RIC vols. 2 and 3; only bronzes, as you've noticed. So it can't be a mule. I am not convinced it's fouree, either, but might be very debased silver. The overall style, especially the fact that the inscriptions seem to have the proper titulature and everything, points away from a "barbarous imitation." Very strange. Write to Curtis Clay at Harlan J. Berk and see what Curtis thinks it is.
View attachment 583033 View attachment 583034 [/QUOTE] Thank you Doug, the reverse made me think its an fourree the green is the core? soon this coin will be here and i can tell more. here are my Fourée/Limes/Imitations ect http://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=5729 i do not have a brockage or a fourree brockage
Thank you RC, i also have a topic about this coin on FORVM, were Curtis also replies on topics. http://www.forumancientcoins.com/board/index.php?topic=110030.msg671527#new no reply so far. i agree on your comments and thoughts, its very Roman mint like in style and legend lettering
coin in hand core seems copper, all green. i think the upper legend is correct, although it also could be P P AVG i don't want to clean it silver chips of already
I would dip it in petroleum for a couple of hours, to me it still looks like a fouree, great coin. and would like to see pics made by yourself.
