Personally, I enjoy coin shows. I get to know Dealers, I come focused on what I am looking for, but open to other coins.

On some of my smaller purchases, yeah, I paid market. But with many of my larger purchases, I felt I scored an excellent deal. Better than the internet or auction prices. I learn a lot, forge great relationships, and enjoy a solid day or two of real entertainment!

I recently moved halfway across the nation from my local stomping ground. One of my Dealer friends that I have met at several shows emailed this week. We just closed a very fair deal, (price and quality), that I doubt I would have received without knowing each other. The face to face helped.

That stated, there are several dealers that I have worked with over the years via internet. However, I strive to strike a good relationship, rather than finding the cheapest price. Quid quo pro.

Agreed to that. My business career has always been in that posture. Hence, my love for ancient military history. Many of those principals I have successfully applied.

I like taking a day and driving to the city to go to coin shows. I find the dealers are willing to haggle over price, offer show discounts, and just talk ancient coins. I've never felt taken advantage of or mistreated in any way by an ancient coin dealer.

I don't agree with the OP's point at all.

I love shows. I think it's a great place to find good deals and make friends.
To me there's nothing better then holding the coin in hand to know if I really like it.

Now the discussion of Ancients that's not my thing.

It really depends. I've seen some grossly overpriced coins and I've gotten some fantastic deals. The benefits outweigh the costs in my eyes (as a collector) so I try to attend as many shows as possible.

I really like attending shows. I get to make connections with dealers and these connections have resulted in some very nice purchases. All of the dealers I interact with are willing to negotiate. It is also a lot of fun to have conversations with those who have a similar interest in ancient coins.
