@Alegandron I really like your Han Xing. It is very hard to find one that looks nice (I don't even have one). Your's looks nice.
I think they were all made within 30 years of each other. They are too similar in style to not be. If the reports of being found in tombs datable to the Western Han are true, then that is pretty conclusive evidence in my opinion
Thank you. I am assuming you mean this coin as a Han Xing? And, that you feel it is dated more as 200-100 BCE?
Just two Chinese coins here: Han China AE 5 Zhu, 25.31mm x 3.1 grams Obv.: Wu Zhu Rev.: Blank Northern Song China Hui Zong, r. 1101-1125 (1102-1106) AE 10 Cash, 35mm x 10.5 grams Obv.: 崇宁重宝 (Chong Ning Zhong Bao) Rev.: Blank The wavy appearance to the second coin is due to my poor editing job...
There is a lot of outdated information out there. Currently these pieces are attributed to Liu Song Dynasty, Emperor Wen Ti, 424 - 453 AD.
I have lots, here are a few interesting: Song Dynasty, Emperor Xiao Wu, 454 - 464 AD Æ19, 1.0 grams Obverse: Xiao Jian. Reverse: Si Zhu. References: Hartill 13.3 Liang Dynasty (?), circa 6th Century AD Æ23, 3.6 grams Obverse: Xu Zhu. References:Zhongguo Guqian Daji, pp279 Zhongguo Qian Bi Da Ci Dian---- Liang Dynasty, Emperor Wu, 502 - 549 AD Æ13mm, 3.6 grams Obverse: Da Ji Wu Zhu.
That coin still looks like the character is added. The wear on the "Zhu" does not match that of "Xu," as well as the weird patina around "Xu." But the story about how you came to acquire it is still quite intriguing. What do I know? Your other two are genuine and very nice to me.
Thanks, Ken! I will definitely take that as the most authoritative opinion. (I'm also happy with it, not having anything else from Liu Song.) But if you could outline any of the evidence too that would be great... e.g. what about those alleged Han tomb finds? Also... any recommendations of which book to get after Hartill?
China T'ien Ming, @1616-1626 AD Imperial coin of the Heavenly Mandate Annam Emperor Hien Tong 1740-1786 AD There is a dragon there on the reverse, although it is hard to see. Would love a nicer one of these..
I have never done anything with that coin as nobody can agree on good or bad. I have even had well known experts look at it one and say genuine, then look at it a year later and condemn. I am not sure of the specific details of their being attributed this way now. Part of the problem is that 99% of all information is written in Chinese, and less than 1% of that gets out of the east and into another language.
I actually don't own any Chinese coins. But I have this soapstone coin mould: I believe it to be Emperor Wen of the (Western) Han Dynasty (2nd century B.C.E.)
