Talers are big and rare purchases for my modest coin budget. I have three including this new addition. While I really have a fondness for smaller German States denominations, occasionally I crave something bigger!

There are several German States I gravitate to. Augsburg is one of those and I have 4 minor coins from there and had never really thought about a taler until I stumbled upon this beauty.

Several months before the IMEX show I began squirreling away any extra cash I could in hopes of finding something BIG and boy did it pay off!!!!

I present to you my newest and now oldest taler!

I love the fact that the date is in Roman numerals, the imagery of the river gods and the wonderful strike! I couldn't be more stoked!

Nice coin. Talers are impressive, aren't they? I have some fractional talers, but only one full taler coin.

That Augsburg thaler is a beauty! The Saxony thaler is also very nice.

I used to have several more thalers from the 17th century, but their numbers have been reduced over the years, sold or traded for various reasons.

Here's one the nicer ones that I still own, issued during the Thirty Years War.

    Hesse-Kassel, Willow Thaler, Wilhelm V, 1630.
