No connection? Because King George III had nothing to do with the creation of America. No British coins circulated in the Colonies, neither did Spanish silver. I do believe Spanish silver was legal tender until the Coinage Act of 1857.

Right. And the US Mint didn't produce coins for foreign countries up until the early 80's, either. Both the largest and smallest diameter coins produced by the US Mint are actually foreign coins.

Doesn't mean that in 2017 I feel a strong enough connection to Great Britain or Spain that I want to collect their coins...

Connection or not, the sentiment he is expressing is the same that is expressed by collectors all over the world. The majority of collectors in any country will primarily if not exclusively focus on coins from their home country

Hey fellow Atlantan, I'm on the north end as well! I would definitely suggest looking up the schedule for the Greater Atlanta Coin Show which occurs (usually) the first Sunday of each month. They host it at the Hilton Atlanta/Marietta Hotel & Conference Center and there is always a great turn out. Check out their website: http://atlcoin.com/index.html

The next show is February 12th, hope to see ya there!
