Does a hair stuck on a coin qualify for details grade?

Someone asked about some funk on his ANACS graded coin elsewhere earlier. I thought they were trolling when I noticed there was, what appears to be, a hair stuck on the coin. He linked the coin to the HA recent sale and, sure enough the hair is there.
Would that classify as details until the hair is removed? How do I value a coin with a hair on it? Maybe there is some collector value to an ANACS graded coin with a hair stuck to it... i dunno.:playful:

I would assume it's from someone's beard (as a beardy fellow who has had hairs ruin photos before).

Because the person who took the pictures actually delivered high quality detailed photos. I told this person to contact heritage since that was where the coins was purchased. I assume this is protected by ANACS guarantee. They put a coin in a grader with enough foreign substance on it for a hair to attach.

ANACS has been bought and sold several times, they only guarantee the new slabs from the current owners. All the older slabs such as this old white holder have no guarantee at all now a days

But they would probably reholder it in blue label holder while removing the hair.

Doesn't really look like a hair, more like a fiber , to me.

I know they do that with the old blue label ones and would assume they would do it with that generation as well. Of course a lot of people would rather have the older holder

With that cert# it was slabbed in the first years after ANACS was sold to Amos Press in 1990. So it's been there at least 20 years. The guy whose beard it came from is probably grey by now.

The problem with having it reordered is that the blue label period was definitely the junk grading years. SWH to blue is not generally an improvement.

Since the sale to Driving Force LLC they've tried to improve (yellow labels).

With the newest ownership shrouded in secrecy and many very aggressive grading specials it is hard to define the current trajectory.

I would just leave the coin as is. It looks like a tiny fiber to me.

Why do you think anything of the sort? It didn't sell/was returned so they relisted it. End of story.

It's been in that slab 20 years, whether it's a fibre or a beard hair, whether it would benefit from a dunk in acetone or not, is irrelevant.

If it bothers the purchaser, they'll just buy it, crack it, dunk it, submit it for grading and hope they come out OK.

I vote very old grader's (50ish) eyelash. Let's get serious. If you look at enough slabs you will find debris all over the coins. Very often, due to the sticky haze on the surface of a coin, all sorts of stuff adheres to them.

IMO, nothing on that coin will harm it over time. Nevertheless, any reputable grading service will fix this for free! So do it.

The person who was not happy with the purchase at all so they contacted HA who accepted the return. They were out the selling fees and shipping. (Op on reddit actually updated).

I would have just kept it, personally, but the person was extremely unsatisfied. Props to HA customer service.
