Hello everyone! I'm new to coin collecting. I came across this one penny. Wondering if it was some kind of error. Knowing my luck it's probably just melted. But I have no clue. It's the size of a dime. Any help would be appreciated! Thank you!
You're right about your luck. The coin was damaged after it left the mint. Someone pounded down the edges. That's why it's a smaller than a regular cent. WWII servicemen would to use a spoon to tap the edges of a silver half dollar to make rings (some people still do this). Once it was the right diameter the would drill the center.
I'm not so sure about this one. Perhaps @paddyman98 will chime in with more information. I do not believe this has been spooned. By the way @coinednikki , welcome to the neighborhood! Nice photos. I like your hat! Chris
Thanks for the quick respond! I figured something like that. But with all these errors I've heard about, I just didn't know. But I am still going to keep it. I like it for some reason.
I've tried looking up different errors, but nothing like this has popped up yet. And thank you! Nikki
I never saw a coin look like that before. I am also wondering what happened to it. Someone might know.
I've got quite a few like this and have always wondered about them. @coinednikki, good question, good first post!
Post #2 explained it best! Spooned Cent I want to share this webpage with you - http://coinauctionshelp.com/spooned_coins.html#.WJJZKnNOkwg Or Dryer Cent! Stuck in a clothes dryer for many years
I'll see if I can hunt down some pictures of mine when I can get loose. @paddyman98, that explanation on that webpage isn't what she's talking about. I'd thought a dryer on ours; at least, at first. I'm not swallowing it, though; at least, not yet.
I can't find pictures of ours. I'll get the coins out and scan them in the next few days, I want to know what this is.
