I'm live near Detroit and have a friend who's father ran a coin store for decades. He's saying he's absolutely sure it's a double die . What is the communities verdict?
I am seeing zero doubling on IGWT and a blob to the right of the 4. IMO, that is not enough evidence to support the hypothesis that this coin is a DDO. Can you see any evidence of split serifs or thick letters besides the blob to the right of the 4? Here are two examples of 1943 S DDO that, hopefully, will be helpful for your friend:
Based upon these poorly lit photo's, my 1st inclination is to say no. However, 1943 had a BUNCH of DDO Washingtons. Some major and some no so significant. Clearer, better lit photo's are definitely needed including LIBERTY.
Where are you getting 1943-S from? Just curious. Also, remember that "split" serif's are not always present on some doubled dies.
Lee - alls I was sayin' was that my two coins were 1943-s. I don't believe the OP said where his friends' coin was born. I also did ask the OP if he saw split serifs or thick letters elsewhere (we can't see the entire obv/rev of the coin, so maybe he sees doubling somewhere else?) Like I said before, (like you) I don't see anything here but a blob to the right of the 4.
