Banknotebank gone?

Just tried going to http://www.banknotebank.com ...

And getting the generic page when there's no content at the domain.

Usually this means the domain owner is no longer paying whoever's hosting the domain.

I hope this isn't permanent... there's not many good, easy, and free to use alternatives for cataloging and storing images of paper money.

Anyone know what's going on? I get the impression the site was pretty passively maintained but I've never been able to get any response from the site owner, ever.

If this is permanent, anyone know any good alternatives? I've been using this site for years and never even considered looking for alternatives. But maybe now I'll have to.

Other possibility is maybe the site got hacked, which isn't a good thing, but at least that would be a temporary problem that could be solved eventually.

That's just a partial list. When I scroll to the bottom there's a message that says the site is for sale. $1500 US.

Well at least I know it's not just me, but not good news. I know I'm not the only one here that uses that site.

Well... anyone know any other good sites for cataloging paper money and hosting images of such? Preferably a free one?

If I recall correctly... They were bought out some years ago and went to greysheet. I may be very wrong here but seem to remember that.

If I am not wrong - banknotebank, omnicoin and coinpeople were all owned by the same person.

    Maybe it's finance related...

It's possible (Omnicoin also seems to be dead, btw). I've noticed for years that there was basically zero changes for years (example: they never added South Sudan as a country even though it became widely recognized as independent in 2011) and no evidence of especially active maintenance, and no attempt to contact the admin was ever answered. My guess is they passively paid the host for a set amount of time, and at some point just decided to let it run out. They allowed ads just enough so the ad revenue paid the hosting cost; maybe the site was just so little used that the ad revenue was no longer enough to sustain itself. Such is life I guess. I used it a lot, and quite a few other people did too, but I noticed it was updated less and less, and notes I posted would be in the top 25 most recently posted for sometimes over a month. Suggests that probably the owner just didn't see it as worth maintaining anymore.

Does kind of suck as I put a lot of work into cataloging my collection there, and there's few sites like that with those features that are simple and free to use. But well not like my physical collection disappeared lol. I'll get over it. I'll miss it though; that site is a big part of what kept me interested in paper money for quite some time.

Yeah one thing I've noticed about "dead" domains is they will sometimes have random redirects to other sites. Not necessarily an especially malicious thing but it does mean you might get sent somewhere you don't want to go.

On a similar note, if this site ever went away, I'd find it a lot harder to maintain my interest in numismatics.

No argument there. I mean, I'd still like the coins and currency I already have, but having people mutually interested in them to talk to is a large part of what motivates me to actively add to my collection, other than random impulses here and there.
