Only coin minted at all US mints

Hi everyone,

I was reading a while back that there is only one coin that was minted at all 8 US mints but I can't remeber what coin it was. Anyone know?

The only coin minted at EVERY US Mint Facility is the $5 Gold Half Eagle.

It was minted at: Philadelphia, Charlotte, Dahlonega, New Orleans, San Francisco, Carson City, Denver, and West Point.

Because here at CT we can argue about anything...

I always felt that this claim was dubious because I feel that the...

A) $5 1/10oz Gold Eagle (1/10 ounce of gold) being minted at West Point since 1994

and...

B) $5 Gold Commemoratives (1/4 ounce gold) being minted at West Point since 1986

are different coins than the...

C) $5 Gold Half Eagles (1/4 ounce of gold) that were minted pre-1933 at the other 7 mints.

Mainly because, despite all of them being $5 denomination,...

C is a half eagle for circulation

A is not a half eagle and is bullion not for circulation

and B, although it is a 1/4 oz gold (i.e. half eagle), is a commemorative not for circulation.

here's where your argument falls flat bdunnse:

In 1984, Olympic Gold $5 Half Eagles were struck at West Point bearing a W mint mark. They are the same $5 gold coin as was struck prior to 1933, and NOT similar to the bullion coins that you mentioned.

 

The 1984 Olympic Gold were $10. The 1986 Statue of Liberty Commemorative was $5 and 1/4 oz gold (half eagle) BUT...and this is my argument you might have missed...it is a commemorative not for circulation, which makes me say it isn't the same as the pre-33 half eagles.

$5 modern commems are same size and ounces of gold (1/4 oz) as the pre-33 $5 half eagles, but the modern $5 gold AGE is smaller because it is only 1/10th oz. gold

 

The coins (modern vs classic) are the same because they are the same denomination.

The OP never asked if ANY of them circulated.

Not trying to argue... I get your point, but the question was what it was, and my answer is still correct.

 

Yes, same denomination but in my mind (which is a very scary and damp and moldy place) not the same "coin" (which is OP's term).

 

Also not arguing with you - it is the correct answer as generally accepted in the numismatic world (and it's in the Red Book!). Just arguing with the "generally accepted as fact" claim that it is a big deal. Just because it is the same denomination minted at all 8 mints isn't a big deal because I feel the $5 denomination minted at West Point is not the same "coin" as the $5 denominations minted at the other 7 mints.

 

But not at Manila, which was technically a US Branch mint.

 

I really appreciate all the input everyone! I did say "coin" but the $5 gold is exactly what i was looking for. It makes sense that it is different designes that were minted by all the mints just the denomination stayed the same.

Is there any single coin.....not denomination....that was minted at more mints than any other coin? Or does the $5 gold still win?

Please clarify what you mean by "single coin".

If you mean "single (general) design", I imagine it's still the (Liberty head) $5 gold, struck at every mint except West Point.

 

Both the $2.50 and $5 gold were minted at all mints (excluding West Point), in 1856 both were minted at all five current active Mints at once.

That'd make for a tough year/mint set.

 

Thanks for that info, and yes I agree. That would be a tough....and expencive set. Would be a fun set to assemble though.

1866 is another fun year that I've seriously considered. 2C, two different Trimes, a Half Dime and a Nickel, motto changes on the Seated Libertys, a barrel of laughs until you realize you're broke.

 

That sounds like a solid set. I have been looking for a set to collect that encompasses all the different mints. Just think it would be cool to have something from every mint, or as many as possible from the same date or denomination.

That or i will just continue upgrading my type set. Started collecting my type set when i first started out so there is alot o would like to upgrade.
