Very excited to pick up my second-ever gold coin and my first one in 11 years! If I were to put together a list of Byzantine emperors, Anastasius would probably be somewhere in the top five. What I love about this coin is it's a tangible little morsel of this emperor's greatest accomplishment, the enormous budget surplus he left behind ready to be exploited by the more ambitious Justinian for all of his grand plans. Any of you have Byzantine gold you'd like to share? Reign: Anastasius, A.D. 491-518. Denomination: AV Tremissis. Diameter: 16 mm. Weight: 1.49 grams. Mint: Constantinople, A.D. 491-518. Obverse: Pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust right. Reverse: Victory advancing right, head left, holding wreath and globus cruciger; in lower field to right, star. Reference: DOC 10a; SB 8.
Lovely coins! And my first ancient gold is a solidus of Heraclius and his two sons that I shared here a while back.
Acquiring a gold coin is always a milestone. 'Coingrats'! It is certainly better than any of my few examples.
