There's not much to explain. The 2017 Philly will have the P on the coin for the first time EVER!

What's the significance? Are there different kinds of the mintmark?

Or do only some of them have the P?

A special request by members was fulfilled to stop the number of threads started asking "How much is this penny worth? ...It is missing the mint mark."

He was just kidding. If you find a 2017 without the "P" mintmark, it would be worth a whole bunch because ALL of the coins struck in Philly are supposed to have the mintmark. This is supposedly a one-time thing for the year 2017. It is my understanding that the Mint will revert back to no mintmark for Philly in 2018.

    2017 cents have "P" mintmarks?

I probably would have never found out because I live in Oregon.

Wow 16 posts and nobody answered the question.

In celebration of the mint's 225th anniversary, they quietly did something unprecedented and put the P mint mark on the cent. They started in Philly and have been in Philly the whole time.

So who Peed on the dies for the mint mark just for this year ?

Guess I should buy some proofs then for future valuation.

So .. if I dremel off the "P", I'd have a rare coin. Guess I'll have to start a thread of a no "P" 2017 penny when I get around to it. :greedy: :arghh: :wacky:

2017 is the 225th anniversary of the United States Mint. This year they are saluting the Original US Mint (Philadelphia) by placing a mint mark on the Cent for the first time ever.
