The COMITI AVGG N N (companion of our Emperors) is different from the regular coinage with Sol; because this reverse has Sol with a cool whip. You have to pronounce "cool whip" like Stewie from Family Guy though. :)

What a "cool" sub-collection group those examples comprise!

Sadly, I've now realized that all my Sol's are whipless (cool or other wise). ;-(

Perhaps my Sol's had their chariot-driving licenses revoked, and therefore had their whips confiscated. :(

Comments: This denarius celebrates a shrine to one of the more unlikely patron deities of the Roman pantheon: Venus Cloacina - the Venus who protected the sewer system (the Cloaca Maxima) of Rome. The Cloaca Maxima was said to have been built under the Etruscan kings, Tarquinius Priscus and Tarquinius Superbus, as a means of draining the swampland around the city’s seven hills. In order to protect the drainage system the Sabine king Titus Tatius was said to have erected a shrine to honor Cloacina, the spirit of the sewer who came to be identified with Venus in the Republican period. By some bizarre twist, the composite goddess Venus Cloacina was ultimately recognized as having two spheres of authority: the protection of the sewers, and the protection of the marital bed.Apparently the Roman Republican mind spent more time in the gutter than is usually admitted.

I just got two more "cool whip" coins

The first one I am particularly happy to get. Besides being unlisted in RIC; it puts me over 140 coins for Constantine from the mint of London. It has a rarer radiate helmet and the shield might have soldiers on it; though it is far from clear. It is also a hoard coin from the 17 February 1976 Saint-Colombier-en-Sarzeau Hoard.

    LMCC_7.03.041.jpg

Constantine I. AD 307/310-337. Æ Follis (22.5mm, 4.43 g, 6h). Londinium (London) mint. Struck circa AD 311-312. Radiate, helmeted, and cuirassed bust left, holding spear over shoulder and shield / Sol standing left, holding globe and whip; –|*//PLN. RIC VI –; RML 353; LMCC 7.03.041 (this coin cited); Huvelin, Deux 53a corr. (Sarzeau not Boursies; this coin cited, illustrated on pl. 8; H. Huvelin, "Le Trésor de Saint-Colombier-en-Sarzeau" in Trésor Monétaires II (1980) 3242 (this coin, illustrated on pl. XXII). Very rare issue. Extremely rare with this obverse legend break. The only example cited by Huvelin.

and this coin, which is also not in RIC; but only because it was misdescribed.

    London_175_corr.jpg

Constantine I. AD 307/310-337. Æ Follis (25mm, 4.07 g, 6h). Londinium (London) mint. Struck circa AD 311-312. Laureate and cuirassed bust left, balteus across shoulder, holding spear and shield / Sol standing left, holding globe and whip; –|*//PLN. RIC VI 175 corr. (bust type); RML 340; LMCC 7.03.029/ 31; Lord Stewartby, "Coins of the Mint of London from the Boursies Hoard" in RN XXXVI (1994), pl. XIII, 26 (same obv. die) Very rare.

  10. Hi Hope this is OK. Just got this Severus Alexander as with Sol reverse, it's not brilliant but clear enough. I collect Constantine issues with Sol Invictus but thought this interesting and a bit of research indicates Septimius Severus may have been the first to feature Sol followed by Elagabalus then Alexander? I think he has a whhhip? say whip = whhhip :) Alexander severus 1.jpg alexander severus 2.jpg alexander severus 2.jpg

my latest coin is pretty awesome

It is not in RIC and it also has the rarer radiate helmet and it looks like there might be figures on the shield; though it is not very clear. Plus, this is a hoard coin, listed in "Le Trésor de Saint-Colombier-en-Sarzeau" in Trésor Monétaires II (plate XXII #3242)

Constantine I. AD 307/310-337. Æ Follis (22.5mm, 4.43 g, 6h). Londinium (London) mint. Struck circa AD 311-312. Huvelin, "Le Trésor de Saint-Colombier-en-Sarzeau" in Trésor Monétaires II (1980) 3242 (this coin, illustrated on pl. XXII). Green patina, die wear, light cleaning scratches. Good VF. Very rare issue. Extremely rare with this obverse legend break. The only example cited by Huvelin.
