Well I finally made it. I bought this coin a short time ago and recently received it. It’s perfect to celebrate. :) It’s a $2.50 Gold Indian, a 1911-D, with the weak D variety. I have the strong D and the rest of them so I have a complete set. There are 15 coins to the set and the 1911-D is the expensive one.
I got this at what I consider is a bargain price but still, it’s a 4 digit coin. I’m not a variety collector but this is definitely one variety that I felt was worth having.
These were minted from 1909 to 1929 but none were minted from 1916 to 1924. Only the 1911 and the 1914 were minted in both Philadelphia and Denver, otherwise they were minted in Philadelphia exclusively.
This coin differs from all previous coins as the design does not have a raised edge and all of the main designs, devices and legends are sunk below the coins surface. This caused an unfounded concern with the public. The recessed design was believed to catch and retain germs.
The coin was designed by Bella Lyon Pratt, as were a few other coins. He was a student of Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Graded by NGC as an AU-55 1911-D Wesk D. It is very difficult to see the D but it’s there, just barely. I never realized how weak the D is on this.

This photo was taken looking straight down and you can’t see the D. The slab also helps to hide the D a tiny bit and it creates a shadow making it almost impossible to see.

This photo was taken upside down and ever so slightly on an angle. If you look very carefully to the left of the arrowhead you can see the D. It may by difficult, if not impossible, to see this from the photo. I did the best I could. If you can’t see a D, just use your vivid imagination and you’ll see it. LOL. It’s really there, believe me. At first glance with this in hand, you can’t help but feel NGC made a mistake on the label but it’s all correct. Enjoy, I will. :)

You weaseled your way into a like for that comment. It made me smile. :)

With your current like count, it's just over 6,800 a year - that's almost 20 in a day.

    That is crazy. ;)
